Rich in natural beauty, high mountain Patan, lakes and biodiversity, the arrival of tourists in Achham has increased in recent times. However, despite the increase in the number of tourists, the development of basic infrastructure including roads, communication, housing and drinking water has not gained the expected momentum.

Spread at an altitude of about 2,050 meters to 3,792 meters above sea level, Ramaroshan is also known as ‘Twelve Bonds, Eighteen Sections’. There are 12 lakes and 18 large plateaus and plains. Spread over about 52 bighas, the Kinemin Plain is considered to be one of the largest plains in the Ramaroshan area. The Kailash River flows through the middle of the plain. The 12 lakes of Ramaroshan include Suniwan, Geraha-Jingle, Batulla, Lamadaha, Lipsedali, Tallo Dhaune, Upper Dhaune, Gagre, Rame, Taulo, Daute and Dallena. According to the tourism committee’s report, Zyngale Lake is the largest among them. Kinemine, Roshan and 18 other Patans have added to the natural attraction of the area.

Ramaroshan is considered to be an important area from the point of view of natural beauty as well as biodiversity. It is said that 12 species of wildlife and herbs including 12 species of rhododendrons, danphe, munal, musk, jharal and ghoral are found here. There are also wetlands and high mountain grasslands in the area. The name Ramaroshan is associated with the local legend associated with two brothers named Ramey and Roshan.

According to local religious beliefs, it is believed that the abode of Shiva and Parvati is here. Due to its natural, religious and cultural diversity, Ramaroshan is considered as an important tourist destination in the far west.

Locals say that the number of domestic tourists has also increased with the publicity of Ramaroshan through social media and other mediums in recent years. However, the road from Mujabagar to Ramaroshan is still a major challenge for tourists to come. Locals say that the road is blocked due to landslides and rivers during the rainy season and some tourists have to return from the road. They say that the construction of the road has been incomplete for years.

The road connecting Ramaroshan was planned to be constructed in three sections: Jayagadh-Majhthana-Gaudakhola, Darna-Mujabagar and Mujabgar-Ramaroshan Road. The total length of these sections is 68.976 km. The Mujabgar-Ramaroshan section is 17.688 km and the contract was awarded for Rs 57.40 crore. Locals have complained that the condition of the road has not improved as expected even after seven years of the beginning of the construction.

There is no official data on the number of tourists visiting Ramaroshan. Although locals and officials involved in tourism management say that the number of tourists comes daily, it is difficult to ascertain the number due to the lack of systematic record of visitors.

Ramaroshan has also been included in the tourism plans of the state and federal governments in recent times. The 100-point agenda for governance reforms of the federal government includes the issue of preparing an implementable plan for the development of systematic tourism in Ramaroshan and Badimalika and other areas.

Purna Bahadur BK, executive officer of Ramaroshan Area Tourism Development and Management Committee, said that tourism management and promotion activities should be increased in the area. According to him, more investment is needed for the expansion of tourism infrastructure.

Declaration of Conservation Area

The Far-Western Provincial Government has declared Badimalika-Ramaroshan Forest Conservation Area as the latest step related to the conservation of Ramaroshan and tourism development. According to the Provincial Forest Act, 2077, the protected area has been declared by incorporating the high hill forests and natural areas of Bajura and Achham.

Badimalika and Triveni municipalities of Bajura and some areas of Mellekh and Ramaroshan rural municipalities of Achham are included in the conservation area.

The conservation area has a total area of 498.4 sq km. The areas of Ward No. 4, 5 and 6 are also included.

There is a plan to construct bio-corridors, conserve watersheds and wildlife habitats, promote eco-tourism and conduct conservation programs with the participation of local communities. The National Trust for Nature Conservation has studied wildlife, flora, wetlands and the possibilities of local employment before establishing the conservation area. It is also said that the possibility of listing the lakes and wetlands in the Ramaroshan area in the Ramsar list in the future is also being studied.

Kali Bahadur Batala, a local, said that with the increase in the number of tourists, local products have also started getting market. According to him, local agricultural products and dishes like millet, buckwheat, sisno, honey are sold through tourists. However, due to the poor condition of the road, it is still difficult to transport the local products to the outside market, he said. Although the attraction of tourists has increased in Ramaroshan, which has natural resources, religious significance, biodiversity and potential for high mountain tourism, it is necessary to improve the infrastructure and management to convert it into long-term tourism development.

Locals and tourism stakeholders have expressed the hope that the contribution of tourism in expanding the market of local products and creating employment could increase if the conservation of roads, communication, drinking water and shelter, as well as lakes and wetlands, could be promoted.

Ramaroshan Hemanta KC, Nepal News Bank Surkhet.
