Kathmandu. Prof. Dr. Sudan Jha, professor of Kathmandu University and expert on artificial intelligence, said that the management of e-waste should be given policy priority. <\/p>\n
He said that with the increasing use of electronic equipment, serious work should be done on the management, reuse and potential economic opportunities related to the waste generated from it. Speaking at the Green Digital Nepal e-Waste Dialogue 2026 BS, Prof Dr Jha said that 22 billion electronic devices are currently connected to the internet worldwide and there could be a large number of devices that are not connected to the internet and are offline. He said that it is necessary to understand how widespread the challenge of electronic waste management is. He said, “At present, 22 billion electronic devices are connected to the internet worldwide. Apart from this, the devices that are not connected to the internet and are offline are equally important. Therefore, everyone should think seriously about where the electronic waste is going and why it is necessary to manage it. It is necessary to make it a policy priority keeping in mind the management, reuse and opportunities that can be created by the waste that arises with the increasing use of electronic equipment. He said that electronic waste should not be seen only as a disposable commodity but also as a resource that can be recycled economically and socially through reuse and management. For this, a holistic <\/p>\n
ecosystem should be developed, from the basic principles of semiconductors such as germanium and silicon to the efficiency of electronic devices, management and reuse of used mobile phones, he stressed. <\/p>\n
Stating that the government was working on formulating a policy on e-waste, Jha said that he was also involved in the initiative in this regard. Taking the theme of the program and the efforts of the organizers positively, he expressed the belief that the government was moving in the right direction for the management of e-waste. <\/p>\n
He opined that Nepal should give priority to infrastructure-based development rather than consumer demand-based development. He said that if infrastructure-based development is to be prioritized, then the management of electric waste generated from it should also be taken seriously. <\/p>\n
In the program, former Minister Ganesh Sah pointed out that discussions should be held with all the stakeholders while making a Green Digital Nepal. He also pointed out that the telecom and ISP operators should create an environment for investment, pointing out the need to collaborate with the CTEVT. <\/p>\n
