Kathmandu. The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has decided to launch a phase-wise agitation after the Chhath festival to protect press freedom and freedom of expression and fulfill its demands. <\/p>\n
A meeting of the central committee of the FNJ held at the FNJ central office on Friday under the chairmanship of Chairperson Nirmala Sharma decided to go for protest by drawing the government’s attention on various issues related to press freedom and the labor rights of journalists. <\/p>\n
The meeting demanded an independent investigation into the incident of police entering the newsroom and arresting the journalist and taking action against the guilty. The FNJ has said that the incident is a blow to the entire journalism sector. <\/p>\n
The FNJ has also decided to request the government to withdraw the ordinance on the Press Council Act that was brought unilaterally without consulting the stakeholders. The FNJ has also said that it will request President Ram Chandra Poudel not to issue the ordinance. The meeting also took the expulsion of journalists from government and private media including Gorkhapatra and denial of remuneration and festival expenses as a serious violation of the labour rights. The FNJ has also drawn the attention of the government to reduce the amount that the newspapers have been receiving for public welfare advertisements. The meeting has also decided to request the government to provide the amount as per the recommendation of Press Council Nepal. <\/p>\n
The FNJ has said that it will launch a phase-wise movement for the protection of the press and freedom of expression and the constitution by activating the Professional Movement for Peace and Democracy (Papad). For this, it has also decided to debate and lobby the lawmakers to create an environment to raise the issue in the parliament and draw the attention of the international community advocating press and freedom of expression on the current situation. <\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
