Kathmandu. In order to systematize the traffic management in Thamel area, two options have been put forward to make one-way traffic operation (one-way) or a vehicle-free zone. <\/p>\n
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, Suresh Prasad Kafle, has said that consensus is necessary among the local government, entrepreneurs, house owners and locals for traffic management in Thamel.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a discussion on traffic management in Thamel area on Friday, he said the traffic police were ready to fully cooperate to implement the decision taken unanimously from the local level. <\/p>\n
“Whether to make Thamel a one-way or a vehicle-free zone, inform about it by taking a unanimous decision at the local level. The traffic police is ready to provide necessary support to implement it,” he said. <\/p>\n
Kafle pointed out the need to include the issue of traffic management in the code of conduct related to the business operation of Thamel. He said that the responsibility and role of businessmen, landlords, local government and police should be clear in traffic management. <\/p>\n
He said that the traffic police are continuously working to implement the one-way road system determined with the consent of the locals. He said that a long-term and systematic plan is necessary as the number of vehicles has increased along with the pressure of people in Thamel in recent times. According to him, unmanaged parking is another major reason for the traffic problem in Thamel. He said that businessmen, homeowners and locals should make proper parking arrangements and coordinate with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City for this. Stating that the risk of road accidents has increased due to drunken driving, he said the priority of the traffic police was to ensure that no innocent person lost their life in road accidents. Kafle said that traffic police are being deployed at various places including Jehed Chowk in Thamel during the day and during peak hours. He also expressed commitment that if additional manpower is required for traffic management, it can be mobilized as per the demand of the locals. Similarly, Chief District Officer (CDO) of Kathmandu, Ishwor Poudel, said that Thamel should be developed as a major center of tourism in Nepal. He stressed on the need to systematize the security, management and commercial activities of Thamel as it is the center of Kathmandu tourism. <\/p>\n
He said that a large part of the tourists coming to Nepal are confined to the Kathmandu Valley and Thamel is the center of Kathmandu tourism sector. According to him, the state should invest in certain tourist areas on the basis of the potential for tourism development and the arrival of tourists. <\/p>\n
Poudel stressed on the need of developing Kathmandu, Solukhumbu, Pokhara, Chitwan, Lumbini, Rara and Bardiya among other areas as major tourist destinations of Nepal. He said that tourism policy should be formulated focusing on potential areas instead of investing haphazardly in the name of developing all 753 local levels as tourism destinations. <\/p>\n
CDO Poudel expressed concern over the increase in some unsystematic and illegal activities along with the tourism business in Thamel. Stating that the business should be fair and dignified, he said that inappropriate and illegal activities could affect the tourism image of Thamel. Sharing his experience of taking action against those involved in illegal activities involving foreign nationals during his tenure as the Director General of the Immigration Department, he said that he has felt that there has been some increase in such incidents in recent times. <\/p>\n
According to him, the foreign nationals involved in illegal activities are being deported to the concerned country through the necessary process after the police have initiated investigation and legal process. Recalling that a businessman of Thamel had voluntarily donated 25 chairs worth Rs 100,<\/p>\n
000, he said these chairs are still being used in the meeting room of the office. <\/p>\n
He also appreciated the support provided by various working committees and organizations of Thamel to make the District Administration Office a systematic and model office. Stating that collaboration among government bodies, local entrepreneurs and stakeholders was necessary for the development and management of Thamel, Poudel stressed the need to give priority to peace and security, decent business and rule of law to protect the tourism identity of Thamel. <\/p>\n
