The Department has made it clear that foreign nationals must obtain permission from the Department of Immigration to trek in the prohibited areas specified in 13 districts of Nepal.

Issuing a press release on Thursday, the Department shared that the entire trekking permission process has been operated through an online system to make the trekking permission process hassle-free, speedy, service-friendly and technology-friendly.

According to the Department, foreign nationals can now apply for trekking permission not only on the basis of the approved visa number of Nepal but also on the basis of the visa application number. In addition, a provision has been made to allow one trekker.

“Arrangements have been made to review the system of keeping the approved visa number of Nepal for foreign nationals going on trekking and apply for trekking permission on the basis of visa application number. Also, one trekker has been granted permission for trekking,” the statement said.

The Department has stated that applications for trekking permit are continuing even though the government offices and public bodies have already implemented the provision of two public holidays on Saturdays and Sundays.

According to the Department, the Department has implemented a new system to make the task of granting trekking permission in the prohibited areas more simple, predictable and efficient, keeping in mind the convenience of the trekking agencies and tourists who want to go for trekking.

The Department has decided to operate trekking permit service even on public holidays except Saturdays with the objective of maintaining institutional good governance.

As per the decision taken on May 6, 2008, the service will now be available for two hours from 11 am to 1 pm on public holidays except Saturdays.

The Department has clarified that the service seekers do not need to be present at the office in person as all the work related to trekking permission is done online. In case of necessary documents or technical problems, they can be contacted within office hours for facilitation.

Meanwhile, it has been found that some trekking agencies have been taking foreign tourists trekking without taking permission, exerting pressure on the officials in the pretext of rescue and applying for permission only after identifying them by the local administration. According to the Department, such acts may lead to action against innocent tourists and will have a negative impact on Nepal’s tourism promotion and international image.

The Department of Immigration has again urged all trekking agencies to take foreign tourists to the prohibited zones only after taking permission, warning that action would be taken as per the existing immigration law if found carrying out illegal activities in the coming days.

Kathmandu.
