Kathmandu. The Indian government has banned the import of high refined silver. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (DGFT) on Friday put import of certain types of silver in the ‘restricted’ category. <\/p>\n
According to Notification No. 17-2026-27, the import of silver bars of 99.9% or more purity can now be allowed only under the rules and special policy conditions of the Reserve Bank of India. This provision has been implemented immediately, the notice states. <\/p>\n
The government has amended the import policy of silver products falling under the ATC HS codes 71069221 and 71069229 under the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992 and Foreign Trade Policy, 2023. <\/p>\n
Importers will have to complete additional approvals and regulatory process as some of the silver products that were previously in the open category are now in the ‘restricted’ list. The Indian government has been taking various steps to control the import of precious metals, manage foreign exchange and curb illegal transactions. <\/p>\n
The new decision is expected to have a direct impact on the silver business, industry and financial sector. According to analysts, India is trying to tighten import controls at a time when prices of the precious metal are fluctuating in the international market. India is one of the world’s largest silver consumers and importers.
