Kathmandu. Kulman Ghising, chairman of Ujjyalo Nepal Party, has expressed serious concern over the government’s decision to levy 5 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on consumers consuming more than 50 units of electricity per month in the budget for the fiscal year 2083\/84. <\/p>\n
Taking to social media, Ghising said that the decision was against international practice, national energy policy and the interest of consumers. According to him, the policy of discouragement of consumers by imposing tax in the current situation of increasing electricity consumption is not compatible with the clean energy promotion and electrification campaign. <\/p>\n
He commented that Nepal has decided to impose additional tax burden on the consumers at a time when various countries including India are adopting encouraging policies to increase the use of electricity. <\/p>\n
Ghising also expressed his disagreement with the statements made by the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister about the capacity of power infrastructure. According to him, the argument that if induction stoves are used in all houses in the country, there will be problems in transformers and substations is not in line with the facts and technical reality. <\/p>\n
According to him, billions of rupees have been invested to strengthen the transmission and distribution system across the country after the end of load-shedding. At present, substations with more than 14,000 MVA capacity and distribution transformers with more than 5,000 MVA capacity are in operation in Nepal. Likewise, 132, 220 and 400 KV transmission lines are currently in operation while additional structures are under construction. <\/p>\n
Stating that works to upgrade the distribution system underground and modernized in the Kathmandu Valley have reached the final stage, he said consumers are using technologies like induction oven, water heater, heater, electric vehicle and charging station.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
