Prime Minister Balen Shah has been criticized for various political and parliamentary issues of late. Prime Minister Shah, who has been following the style of ‘speaking less and answering with action’, has rarely attended public programs and even in Parliament.

Lately, the MPs have been raising their voices saying that the Prime Minister should be present in the parliament and answer the questions asked by the lawmakers. Lawmakers have been demanding that the prime minister be present in parliament and answer questions from people’s representatives.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah was present in the House addressing the demands of the lawmakers. His appearance came as a surprise for a few moments. The lawmakers in the opposition were surprised. Neither the Speaker nor the MPs were aware of his presence.

Another surprising thing was that the Prime Minister himself raised his hand and asked the Speaker for time to answer the questions of the MPs from the rostrum. Responding to his demands, the Prime Minister gave permission.

Prime Minister Shah had responded to various questions raised by the lawmakers in the parliament. Responding to a query on India’s encroachment, PM Shah said, “After I became the Prime Minister, I came to know that not only India, Nepal has also encroached on Indian land in various places. ’

His unexpected and surprising answer has been a matter of concern everywhere.

Question on national independence

Various political parties have objected to the Prime Minister’s reply and have also sought clarification. He has accused the government of weakening Nepal’s official stance on the issue of Indian encroachment on Nepal’s territories including Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura.

The political parties say that it will weaken the border issues that Nepal has been raising since the past and send a wrong message at the international level.

Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has termed the remarks made by the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP)-led government at a time when Nepal has been demanding the return of its territory.

After the Prime Minister’s remarks, the media took reactions from the border experts. Border experts have said that Nepal has not encroached on India’s land.

Earlier, various governments had been raising the issue of encroachment of Nepali land in the parliament. Instead of continuing the same tradition, the current government led by the RSP has become a topic of political debate after the two-thirds majority government expressed a different opinion.

Opposition parties have demanded further clarification in Parliament on the Prime Minister’s remarks. Border experts are also saying that there is no truth in the Prime Minister’s statement.

Border expert Buddhi Narayan Shrestha has claimed that Nepal has not encroached on India’s land or encroached upon its border. According to him, although there has been cross-holding occupation and encroachment in some parts of the Tarai region, there has been no encroachment of the border.

Likewise, the Nepali Congress has expressed serious objection over the remarks made by the Prime Minister in the parliament on border, terming it irresponsible and against diplomatic decorum.

Issuing a press release today, PM Dahal said that Nepal’s remark in the parliament that Nepal has encroached on its borders in many places has weakened Nepal’s sovereignty, national integrity and established national standing. “The constitutional map of Nepal, historical facts and national sentiment have been seriously hurt,” the statement reads.

However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has clarified that the Prime Minister’s statement in the parliament that in some places Indian land may be on the side of Nepal is related to technical reality and the situation of ‘cross-border occupation’.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the reply to the diplomatic note sent by Nepal to this regard was received from the Government of India through diplomatic note and the border disputes between the two countries would be resolved through diplomatic channels and mutual consultations.

“In keeping with the spirit of close relations between Nepal and India, the government is always committed to resolving all border issues through diplomatic dialogue on the basis of the historic treaty, agreement and map,” the ministry said in a statement.

Questions are also being raised whether the Prime Minister’s statement on a sensitive issue like the border is his personal opinion or the government’s official view. What clarification the government will give in the coming days is a matter of concern.

Kathmandu.
