Kathmandu. Tsunami warnings have been issued for several Pacific countries after a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern island of Mindanao in the Philippines. According to Al Jazeera, the quake struck early Monday morning, causing major structural damage in the Philippines. So far, 5 people have been confirmed dead due to the earthquake. <\/p>\n
The aftershocks lasted for more than an hour, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said. Emergency services have been activated in the Philippines after the earthquake. The Civil Defence Office and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council have been mobilized for rescue and relief work. <\/p>\n
Authorities in nine prefectures \u2014 Sarangani, Davao Occidental, Tawi-Tawi and Sulu \u2014 were urged to evacuate and move to safer places. Meanwhile, North Sulawesi, Gorontlo province and Sanghihe islands were also issued tsunami warnings, warning residents to move higher. Authorities in Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia have issued warnings of dangerous skin hazards in the seas. <\/p>\n
The US-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said initial waves up to a meter high could reach the coast of the Philippines, as well as parts of Indonesia and Malaysia. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the first tsunami waves are expected to hit the Philippines and Indonesia around 10 a. m. local time. Southern Japan, Taiwan, Micronesia, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands are also likely to be affected. <\/p>\n
The U. S. National Tsunami Warning Center said the quake did not pose a major threat to the U. S. coast. However, a tsunami warning has been issued for some of Japan’s southern islands. The northern Mariana islands and Guam are expected to remain high sea currents and dangerous sea conditions, even if earlier warnings are lifted. <\/p>\n
