KATHMANDU: Nepal’s energy and economic experts have said that there is a significant possibility of trilateral cooperation between India, Bangladesh and Nepal. They said that cooperation in areas such as energy, trade and connectivity will help create regional markets and achieve shared prosperity.

Speaking to ANI, Nepal Foundation expert and energy expert Bibek Raj Kandel said that the countries in the region can no longer be isolated and should focus on building partnerships based on mutual economic benefit.

“I see a lot of potential for trilateral cooperation. Because we are in a place where loneliness is unbearable. That’s a matter of economic diplomacy. Mutual discussion is important in that,” he said.

Highlighting opportunities in the energy sector, Kandel said Nepal’s additional clean energy can support Bangladesh’s industrial growth, while India can benefit from its role as a transit country.

“I’ll give you an example of energy. Nepal’s clean energy can be a big boost for most of Bangladesh’s industries. India, as a transit country, can monetise its transit infrastructure,” he said.

Kandel stressed that regional cooperation should focus on tangible economic benefits for all stakeholders.

“Therefore, we should not expect any country to act only out of philanthropy. There should be financial incentives. We have to have a common share in what we do together,” he added.

Kandel also pointed out the tourism sector as another area with strong potential for trilateral cooperation. He said that this will be possible especially through improved connectivity and easy movement of people.

Stressing the need to strengthen regional connectivity, Kandel said that easing travel and business contacts should be in priority.

Kandel, who is currently on a tour of Bangladesh to participate in the economic diplomacy conference organised by the ministries of different countries, said Nepal and Bangladesh are now under the leadership of governments who have new mandate and opportunities to strengthen economic engagement.

“When we talk about Nepal and Bangladesh, both countries have very fresh mandates. The two governments are very energetic. But the bottom line is that in the context of economic diplomacy, energy must be a priority for citizens to be part of progress and shared prosperity,” he said. Expressing optimism about regional cooperation, Kandel said greater economic integration between Bangladesh, India and Nepal can help create ample opportunities for growth and development.
