Kathmandu. The issue of a bus accident in Karnali Province has been raised prominently in the House of Representatives.\u00a0In the meeting held on Monday, lawmakers of various political parties expressed serious dissatisfaction over the delay in rescue work, poor condition of the roads and the government’s negligence and demanded the government to take effective steps immediately. <\/p>\n
The bus plunged into the Karnali River on July 1. Following the accident, some passengers have gone missing and rescue and search operations are still underway. The accident has once again raised serious questions on road safety in Karnali. <\/p>\n
Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) lawmaker Gyanendra Shahi commented that the government’s irresponsibility and failure was more than an accident. He said that the rescue operation could not be done in time even though the passengers were pleading for their lives in the middle of the river after the accident. <\/p>\n
Stating that the government’s failure to mobilize helicopters for rescue operations was a serious weakness, he blamed discrimination against the people of Karnali. <\/p>\n
Nepali Congress chief whip Basana Thapa said the Karnali accident has left the entire country in tears and it is unfortunate that the exact details of the incident have not been made public even after so much time. <\/p>\n
Stating that the roads in Karnali have now become more like ‘death roads’ than roads, she said it was not a minor accident but a result of the extreme negligence of the state. <\/p>\n
Thapa also drew the attention of the government to implement concrete plan to upgrade the Karnali Highway, ensure road safety and prevent such accidents from happening again. <\/p>\n
Similarly, CPN (UML) lawmaker Eshuda Kumari Baral expressed dissatisfaction over the government, saying the condition of the missing is still unknown even 72 hours after the accident. <\/p>\n
Blaming that the people of Karnali have been victims of the state’s negligence time and again, she urged the government to transform the Karnali Highway into a safe road from the ‘road of death’. She also accused the Prime Minister of paying more attention to publicity-oriented activities rather than resolving the problems of Karnali. <\/p>\n
Similarly, Ramesh Kumar Sapkota of Rastriya Janajatantra Party (RSP) raised the issue of Karnali accident and pointed out the need for the government to pay special attention to road safety and make rescue works effective. <\/p>\n
He said that if the highway was not in compliance with the standard, then the engineers and contractors who built the highway during the tenure of the then government should be investigated and brought to book. <\/p>\n
The lawmakers have urged the Karnali government to improve road infrastructure, enhance the capacity of rescue mechanisms, effectively manage emergency service and ensure the availability of helicopters and necessary rescue equipments in remote areas. <\/p>\n
The voices raised in the House of Representatives have presented the Karnali accident not just as a road accident but as a serious issue related to the state’s service delivery, infrastructure development and disaster management capacity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
