Kathmandu. ‘Wai Wai’, which has been dominating the Nepali noodle market for decades, has been given a tough competition by the bitter flavoured noodles introduced in the market in recent times. CG Foods Nepal Limited, a subsidiary of the Chaudhary Group, has seen a contraction in its operating income as consumer interest has shifted to new tastes. <\/p>\n
According to a recent rating report by ICRA Nepal, the aggressive expansion of the market through new domestic and foreign noodles has had a direct impact on the business of CG Foods. <\/p>\n
According to the statistics, the consolidated operating income of the company declined by 2.72 percent to Rs 11.35 billion in the fiscal year 2080\/81 from Rs 11.67 billion in the fiscal year 2080\/81. ICRA Nepal has stated that the change in consumer preferences and especially the growing craze for Piro noodles has helped new competitors to establish themselves in the market faster. <\/p>\n
This has put pressure on the market share and profitability of Wai Wai, which has been a market leader for a long time. The company’s operating profit margin has also seen a sharp decline due to increasing competition in Piro noodles and fluctuations in the price of raw materials. The consolidated operating profit margin has come down to 6.6 percent in the last fiscal year from 12.1 percent in the fiscal year 2080\/81. However, as noodles still account for more than 74 percent of the company’s total revenue, competing with the changing market demand has become a major challenge for the company. While the company has been trying to diversify its products and introduce new flavours in recent times, the rapid expansion of new brands has increased both price wars and brand wars in the market. <\/p>\n
The company plans to meet the challenge by increasing export sales and expanding investment in other sectors such as snacks and beverages. Although the company’s profit margin has improved in the first nine months of the current fiscal year, ICRA Nepal has pointed to the competition caused by the pirho noodles as a risk that needs to be monitored in the long term.
