The World Youth Skills Day is being observed today with the objective of strengthening the socio-economic status of youths. The United Nations General Assembly has declared July 15 as the World Youth Empowerment Day to address the growing unemployment, lack of skills in the labour market and lack of qualifications.

In December

2014, the United Nations General Assembly decided to observe July 15 as World Youth Skills Day.

This day has been creating a global debate with the aim of connecting the youth with the necessary skills, technology and employment. Even in a country like Nepal with a large youth population, youth skills and skill development are important issues. Saroj Baniya, a youth activist who has been campaigning for youth rights and social issues for the past one and a half decades, said that youths have high expectations in terms of employment, entrepreneurship and building their future after the recent political changes in Nepal.

In an interview with Nepal

News Bank, the founder of Nepal Youth Council said youths have high expectations from the incumbent government on issues related to livelihood, livelihood and future.

He said, “Especially after the Gen-G movement, there was a political change in Nepal. Then the country went to the polls and a new mandate was formed. Today, Nepali youths have high expectations on everyday issues related to livelihood, livelihood and future. According to him, the main aspiration of today’s young generation is to create opportunities in their own country. According to him, an environment should be created to do entrepreneurship and use one’s labour and skills in Nepal by reducing the compulsion to go abroad.

‘The youth want to be able to enterprise, sweat and labor for the development of their own country, even if they are small in their own country and in this land. He also said that the state should create an environment in which the country can utilize the increasing competitive opportunities in the world.

Stating that the presence of youths in the country’s leadership has increased, Baniya said youth-friendly policies and programmes should be formulated accordingly.

‘The Prime Minister of the country is now a 36-year-old young man. Youths are also represented in the cabinet. A large number of youths have also come to the parliament. In such a situation, it is natural to expect more effective programs related to skills, technology and employment for the youth,” he said.

However, he is of the view that youth should be kept at the center in the policies and programs of every sector, not just a separate program in the name of youth. He said, “Youth is not just a separate field, it is a cross-cutting subject related to all subjects.

Youths have a role to play in all areas of AI, technology, innovation, digital literacy, entrepreneurship. According to him, although the government’s policies and programs have incorporated issues related to youth, their effective implementation is still challenging.

‘The level we expected was great. Nepal is now in a state of demographic advantage. “The youth population is our opportunity, but there is still a lot of work to be done to create the skills and opportunities we need to capitalise on it,” he said.

Wangiya, a youth activist, stressed the need for Nepal to adopt the concept of ‘one youth, one skill’. According to him, Nepali youths can get good opportunities in the international labor market if they can produce skilled human resources.

‘We have a large youth workforce, but many are forced to go abroad without the necessary skills. If the state can teach them skills as per the demand of the market, their income will increase and their risk will also be reduced,” he said.

He said that the technical and vocational education system should be made more effective. He suggested that young people should be empowered especially in areas such as information technology, artificial intelligence (AI), data analysis, software development, digital services and freelancing.

‘Now is the time for technology-based work, not just traditional employment. With the help of a computer and internet, we can stay in Nepal and connect to the world market,” he said.

A large number of youths from Nepal go to different countries for foreign employment.

But most of the youths go abroad without adequate skills, so they are forced to do low-wage and risky work.

“A lot of young people who go to the Gulf countries still go to the Gulf countries as ordinary workers,” he said.

Sending them to the international market with the skills they need can improve both their income and their standard of living. According to him, there is a need to impart basic computer knowledge, language, technology and vocational skills to the youths who want to go abroad.

Stating that the style of working is changing all over the world, Waniya said that the youths of Nepal should also update themselves with the new technology.

According to him, the world economy has moved forward in a new way after COVID-19. Now artificial intelligence, the gig economy and digital jobs are expanding.

‘Earlier, there was a system of going to the office in the morning and working at a fixed time. Technology is changing the way we work. Now we can work from Nepal for companies all over the world,” he said.

He said the government should simplify freelancing, digital work and international payment systems.”Nepal is still facing problems in terms of international payments, data access and digital infrastructure,” he said.

‘Even if we try to learn something, it is difficult to use international services. It is difficult to buy software, take online training and get access to various digital services. The state should create a conducive environment to address such problems,” he said.

He also pointed out the need to make the youth organizations effective

and make the government structures established for the youth active.

According to him, the National Youth Council, Youth Self-Employment Fund and other institutions have not been functioning effectively.

“Instead of removing the old structures that are useless, they should be restructured and moved forward with new thinking and leadership.” The organization is not bad, the leadership and working style will determine the results,” he said.

He said that such organizations can be made effective by bringing youths into the leadership. Saying that awareness is also necessary along with skill development

while working in the youth sector, Baniya said that it is not enough to make policies only by making policies while working in the youth sector.

According to him, it is necessary to spread public awareness before the state implements the rules.

‘In a developing country like ours, education and awareness are necessary before taking strict action at the same time. Youths should be made aware of rules, opportunities and responsibilities,” he said.

He said that a campaign should be launched to make the youth aware through social media.

On the occasion of World Youth Efficiency Day, Baniya urged youths to focus on their capacity building.

‘Today your mobile, laptop and internet are the only way to connect with the world. You can learn a lot if you want. You should never stop yourself,” he said.

He urged the youth to develop the habit of learning something new every day.

‘Learn AI tools, data analysis, new technology, and digital skills. It gives you the ability to compete with the global market even while staying in Nepal,” he said.

According to him, the government should work to create opportunities, but the youth should also play an active role in developing their capacity.

‘Take the oyster in your hand. Youths should take the lead to enrich their soil. It is time for the youth to change the country,” he said.

The World

Youth Efficiency Day has taken forward the debate to connect youths with skills, technology and opportunities across the globe including Nepal. According to Baniya, a youth campaigner, if Nepal connects its youth human resources with the right skills and opportunities, this population can become a big force for economic development, not a challenge.

Saroj Baniya Young Activist The 36-year-old Prime Minister understands the sentiments of the youth, is expected to give opportunities in the country: Saroj Baniya The concept of ‘One Youth, One Skill’ should be taken forward in Nepal: Saroj Baniya Kathmandu.
