Kathmandu KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Guru Baral has commented that the party was gradually deviating from its main ideological ground, BP. Speaking at a press conference organized by Nepal News Bank on the occasion of the 44th BP Memorial Day here today, he said the NC should not limit itself to garlanding the portrait of BP Koirala but should revive his political philosophy. <\/p>\n
According to Baral, the NC weakened many of the values propounded by BP Koirala during the peace process, power-sharing and political agreements.<\/p>\n
Admitting that this could be the need of the present situation, he said that the party should now enter the phase of ideological comeback. <\/p>\n
According to him, the upcoming 15th general convention is not only an opportunity for the NC to elect its leadership but also for ideological renaissance.<\/p>\n
“If we are not able to reinvigorate BP politics in the party’s policy, manifesto and organisation, the NC’s very identity will be in jeopardy,” he said. <\/p>\n
Baral pointed out the need to reinterpret BP’<\/p>\n
s socialism in today’s context. According to him, there is a tendency within the Nepali Congress to give excessive priority to privatization and open market, which is weakening the spirit of social democracy. <\/p>\n
He stressed the need for strengthening the role of the state in basic services such as education, health, food security and housing.<\/p>\n
“BP did not reject the private sector, but believed that the responsibility of the state is indispensable in the sectors directly related to the lives of the people,” he said. <\/p>\n
Baral also expressed dissatisfaction with the economic policy of the incumbent government.<\/p>\n
He said that the burden of tax on education, health and daily consumption has increased after the political forces who stood in favour of social democracy came to power before the elections, he cited it as an example of ideological deviation. <\/p>\n
According to him, even though the people voted for change, the government’s priorities are more market-oriented than the poor and low-income groups.<\/p>\n
“It is against the spirit of social democracy to create additional financial burden when the state should provide relief to the weaker sections,” he said. <\/p>\n
Baral also questioned the current practice of democracy.<\/p>\n
He argues that the popularity or political fervor seen on social media cannot be called a modern democracy. “The real objective of democracy is to ensure a dignified life, equal opportunity and freedom to every citizen,” he said. <\/p>\n
‘BP’s democracy means that all citizens get equal opportunities without infringing on anyone’s rights. The philosophy that the state should ensure a minimum standard of living is equally relevant today,” he said. <\/p>\n
He also warned that if the NC fails to restore its ideological clarity, the attraction towards the party will decrease among the new generation.<\/p>\n
According to him, the party should now start a comprehensive discussion on BP’s ideology from the cadres to the people. Only then should it be linked to the manifesto, policy and future constitutional reforms, he said. <\/p>\n
Describing BP Koirala as the main ideological foundation of the democratic journey of modern Nepal, Baral said that his ideology would become more refined with time.<\/p>\n
“Democracy, nationalism and social justice can be strengthened only when BP is remembered and his ideologies are made basis for running the state,” he said. <\/p>\n
Baral’s remarks on the occasion of BP Memorial Day indicate that the ideological debate will resume within the Nepali Congress.<\/p>\n
His message that the party should focus on ideology rather than organisation is likely to intensify the ideological debate within the party, especially as preparations for the upcoming general convention are underway \u0964 <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
