Therefore, when there is excess production, milk should be made into powder and butter and kept in the store. If the product is not sold for at least six months, it will affect the cash flow and delay payment to the farmers,” he said.

Spokesperson Gautam said that the payment of arrears of farmers is becoming easier as the stock is being sold gradually.

‘Earlier, payment was due for six to seven months. Now the situation has improved to 2-3 months,” he said.

Gautam said that the main objective of DDC is to collect milk from the farmers and deliver quality milk and milk products to the consumers and to return the money received from the sale to the farmers. According to him, the corporation has been collecting milk from farmers from Mechi in the east to Mahakali in the west.

He said that DDC had to bear higher cost than private dairies due to the government’s obligation to bring milk produced by farmers in remote areas to the market.

He said that DDC was established with the objective of preventing the wastage of milk of farmers in remote areas and to ensure that the price of their produce reaches the villages.”We could only manage by collecting the milk we had,” he said.

But the government’s aim is to provide relief to farmers in remote areas, so we collect milk from all over the country. “

He said that the private dairies mostly collect milk from nearby areas and operate in a profit-oriented manner. Therefore, due to transportation, cold chain and management, we also have more financial burden.

He said that the market of packaged milk has added to the challenge due to the openly sold milk.

Stating that consumers still have faith in open milk, he said, “Many consumers believe it when the seller says that it is the milk brought from the farm.”

But we have been collecting milk from Mechi in the east to Mahakali in the west and bringing it to the market by maintaining the entire cold chain. “

Spokesperson Gautam said that the new government’s interest in promoting domestic products has had a positive impact on the sale of DDC products.

Stating that DDC has been discharging its responsibility successfully in the current fiscal year 2082÷83, he said that the government’s interest towards DDC products after the formation of the new government has played a positive role in increasing the sales.

He said, “After the formation of the new government, the Dairy Development Corporation has received some help. Since the government has shown interest in our products, it seems that the publicity has been done by the government. As a result, the sale of dairy products is increasing to some extent. “

However, the sale of dairy products will not be the same throughout the year, he said. He said that sales will change according to consumer demand and season.

According to him, the consumption of milk products increases significantly during festivals, marriages, bratabandha and other religious ceremonies.

He said that the demand for curd, lassi, mahi, ice cream and other products increases significantly during summer, festivals, weddings, bratabandha and religious activities.

Trying to make Mohi an alternative to cold drink

DDC has launched Mohi with new branding from this year.

According to Gautam, Mohi is being promoted as an alternative to sugary beverages like Coke and Fanta as it is a natural and health-beneficial beverage.

‘If the consumers use indigenous peasants, the money received from it will reach the farmers of the village. If the consumption increases, the farmers will be encouraged to increase their production,” he said.

According to Gautam, out of 15-20 types of dairy products of DDC, the highest stock is butter and milk powder. Last year, around 500 metric tons of butter and 700 metric tons of milk powder were in stock and now they are being sold in the market, Gautam said. He said that the period from April to September is considered as the ‘take season’ and during this period, the production of milk from the farmers will decrease but the demand for the market will increase. He said, “The demand for milk products and cold drinks will increase due to festivals, religious activities and hot weather, so the butter and powder in stock are gradually being spent in the market.”

“

Competition challenge with private dairy

DDC has pointed out competition with private dairy as the main challenge.

According to Gautam, DDC is finding it difficult to manage the cost as the private dairies collect milk from close to the production area, offer higher prices and operate in a profit-oriented manner. However, he claims that DDC is still at the forefront of meeting all government standards of quality.

‘We fully comply with the Government of Nepal’s food quality and packaging standards. DDC is still number one in terms of quality,” he said.

40-year-old technology, technology needs to be modernized

DDC has said that technology modernization is the main need of the hour.

According to Gautam, production is still being carried out using a 40-year-old system as there has not been much investment in production technology after 1988 (2045 BS). He said that with investment in digital and modern technology, milk products like baby powder, chocolate and other value-added dairy products can be produced in the country.

‘DDC being a service-oriented organization, it cannot make a big profit by fixing the price on its own. Therefore, the government’s investment is necessary for technology improvement,” he said.

Expressing gratitude to the farmers and consumers, Gautam urged to increase the use of milk and milk products in the country.

According to him, DDC has been able to operate its services continuously due to the support of the consumers and the continuous support of the farmers.

Efforts are being made to make DDC modern and competitive: Spokesperson Gautam Manisha Basnet, Nepal News Bank Kathmandu The Dairy Development Corporation (DDC) has processed and marketed around 60 million liters of milk in the fiscal year 2082÷83 with a turnover of around Rs 4 billion.
