KATHMANDU — Prime Minister of Nepal Balendra Shah has said the government was committed to addressing the demands of industrialists and entrepreneurs for expanding the international market of Nepali products.

The Prime Minister had invited representatives of Nepal Plywood Producers’ Association, Nepal Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Nepal Pashmina Industry Association and Nepal Dog Chew Manufacturers Association for discussion at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers today. During the two-hour-long discussion, Balram Gurung, president of Nepal Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said that although the US and Europe are the main markets for Nepali carpet, the new American rules have caused difficulties in exporting carpet and the entrepreneurs have been affected. According to him, the United States has made the certification of the Consumer Product Safety Commission mandatory from July 8, but due to the lack of such facility in Nepal, exports have been stopped.

He, therefore, requested that a diplomatic note be sent to the US Department of Customs through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to get the grace period for one year until further arrangement. Prime Minister Shah directed the Ministry to immediately implement the demands.

On the occasion, Gurung urged the Prime Minister to get the ‘quarantine certificate’ of wool, a raw material imported from outside, for carpet production.

He said that the businessmen are facing problems as the certification work is done only three times a month.

Prime Minister

Shah directed the bodies concerned to immediately carry out the ‘quarantine certification’ two days a week.

Similarly, President of Nepal Plywood Producers’ Association, Hom Prasad Ghimire, complained that although the quality of plywood imported from other countries was better than importing from other countries, some existing legal provisions were causing problems to the entrepreneurs in this sector.

According to him, 85 plywood industries have invested Rs 4,000 crore in Nepal, but the raw materials (veneer) required for plywood are being exported from Nepal to India at a very cheap customs rate. The Prime Minister said that the government was working to increase the customs duty and discourage the export of raw materials.

Dhan

Prasad Lamichhane, president of Nepal Pashmina Industries Association, said that the government was complaining that it was difficult to rearing sheep in the grazing area due to the Forest Act despite having sufficient grazing land in the mountainous region.

Resham Bahadur Pokharel, president of Nepal Dog Chew Manufacturers Association, said that they have not been able to produce and export as per their demand due to some legal hurdles in Nepal.

The Prime Minister said that his demand to keep Dog Chew as a ‘pet food’ industry for keeping it in the dairy production and to make it easier for such industries to import ‘skimped milk powder’ would be studied and addressed.

.
