Harishayani Ekadashi is an important festival of Hindus. It is believed that from this day, Lord Vishnu will go into yognidra for four months. On this occasion, there is a tradition of planting Tulsi in every house and worshiping it regularly.

This tradition is not only associated with the worship of Tulsi but also with respect and conservation of nature.

According to religious beliefs, it is believed that when Lord Vishnu is in Yoganidra, his divine power manifests in Tulsi.

Tulsi planted on Harishayani Ekadashi is worshiped with devotion throughout Chaturmas, while on the day of Haribodhini Ekadashi, there is a classical tradition of performing Tulsi marriage with the belief that Lord Vishnu will wake up from Yoganidra.

In a conversation with Nepal News Bank, Assistant Professor Dr. Narayan Prasad Niraula has said that the main basis of religious tradition is to follow the rituals, deeds and conduct directed by the scriptures. He said bathing, purity, charity and religious conduct are of special importance during Sankranti and other virtuous periods.

According to him, the Ekadashi of Ashadha Shukla Paksha, which is called Harishayani Ekadashi.

This year, Harishayani Ekadashi falls in the month of Saun because of the difference between the lunar month and the solar month, Niraula said.

He said, “The context of planting Tulsi is separate and important. Therefore, even though the Ekadashi of Ashadha Shukla Paksha, also known as Harishayani Ekadashi, falls in the month of Saun this year, there are basically two lunar and solar months and the lunar month is used for religious rituals. This is the month of the solar month. He said that this year Harishayani Ekadashi falls in the month of Saun due to Adhikmas and next year the festival will again fall in the month of Asar. According to him, when an extra month is added to the lunar month, such a change is seen in the date of religious festivals.

“There is a slight difference between the lunar month and the solar month,” he said.

Let’s see in the month of Jeth, this time there was one more lunar month than what is more than Adhikmas in Jeth. Because of that, there was more mass. Due to that extra month, this year’s Tulsi planting day fell on our Saun. According to him, the Ekadashi of Ashadha Shukla Paksha is called Harishayani and Harishayani means Lord Vishnu Hari, who goes to the sleeping room. Because this is the time of the gods. Just as in one year, the gods have one day and night. The night of the deity begins from Shravan. For this reason, it is time to sleep during the month of Shravan, due to which God also sleeps.

Niraula said that there is a religious belief that the four months from Harishayani Ekadashi to Haribodhini Ekadashi are considered as the period of Lord Vishnu’s yogic sleep. According to him, on the day of Harishayani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu goes to sleep and after that there is a tradition of worshiping Tulsi for four months.

‘There is a period of four months from Harishayani to Haribodhini, during which Lord Vishnu goes to the sleeping room. This is the time when Tulsi is planted and from then on, Tulsi is worshiped regularly,” he said.

He said that there is a religious belief that Lord Vishnu wakes up from Yognidra on the day of Haribodhini Ekadashi.

He said, “On Harishayani Ekadashi, Tulsi is planted and then served and on Haribodhini Ekadashi, marriage is also performed. There is a classical tradition about marriage and there is a classical system. According to him , Tulsi is considered as a symbol of Lord Vishnu. According to him, there is a deep religious relation between Tulsi and Vishnu as Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh are accepted as the gods of creation, sustenance and destruction respectively in Hinduism.

He said that each Ekadashi has its own religious significance.

He said that Kamika Ekadashi is associated with the belief that wishes are fulfilled.

Similarly, the period from Harishayani to Haribodhini is considered special as Chaturmas and during this period, fasting, worshiping and worshiping Lord Vishnu brings special merits, he said. Although all Ekadashi have the same religious significance, these two Ekadashi are described as special festivals in Hindu scriptures.

Ekadashi of Ashadha Shukla Paksha, which is called Harishayani Ekadashi.
