. The report states that the main problems of inundation in Maitighar Mandala area during the rainy season are technical errors in the construction of infrastructures around the area, encroachment in the water flow area and destruction of natural water extracting area. <\/p>\n
A monitoring team led by Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Sunita Dangol, along with development partners, chiefs and representatives of the bodies working in the field of facilities and service management was carried out on July 19 after the area started inundated due to incessant rains.<\/p>\n

After the monitoring, acting chief Dangol directed a joint team of officials of the concerned office to submit a technical report.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
The committee formed under the coordination of Under-Secretary Ram Bahadur KC, Chief of the Response Section of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), prepared the field report after the directive of the acting chief.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
The team comprised senior engineer of Kathmandu metropolis Jeevan Regmi, engineer at Department of Roads Purushottam Bhandari and manager of Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited Ujjwal Shrestha as members.<\/p>\n
According to the report, there is a serious engineering fault in the sewerage system in Maitighar Mandala area. There is a 90-centimeter sewer in the upper part of the sewage entering the Maitighar area. The sewerage system has narrowed to 60 centimeters at the bottom. The report states that the water coming from the upper part is not able to withstand the pressure of water coming from the upper part due to the problem of bottlenecking and the water is leaking out on the road.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In addition, when the level of the Tukucha River rises, due to the problem of backflow of sewage water instead of going into the river. Maitighar is also seen to be submerged. <\/p>\n
Apart from physical infrastructure, the report also points out environmental and urban development and management as major links to inundation.<\/p>\n
In the past, the open spaces adjacent to Maitighar Chowk served as a ‘natural watershed’. This used to absorb rainwater from the ground. However, the land has been covered with concrete after the construction of big buildings including the District Police Complex Kathmandu and the District Government Attorney’s Office in those areas. As a result, the natural process of absorbing water has stopped. The technical team concluded that due to this, the amount of water flowing to the surface has increased drastically and is directly concentrated at Maitighar Chowk. <\/p>\n
The problem of encroachment has also been found to be equally responsible for the inundation of Maitighar. During the monitoring, it was found that the construction of structures of private and government buildings on the drainage in some places has hampered the regular sanitation. The accumulation of plastic waste, bottles and stones and pebbles inside the drainage pipes has further obstructed the flow of water.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
