KATHMANDU: The Press Council Nepal has urged the media, journalists and social media users to disseminate facts-based, balanced and responsible news in view of the tens of tension seen in various parts of the country following the incident that took place in Captain Gunj of Sunsari district. <\/p>\n
Issuing a press release on Friday, the Council has said that facts, human sensitivity, religious and social harmony and public welfare should be given priority while publishing and broadcasting news, photos, videos or other materials.<\/p>\n
Special caution has been urged while publishing and disseminating unconfirmed, misleading or provocative material which may spread violence, terror, ill-will and confusion in the society. <\/p>\n
The Council has also thanked most of the media for practicing restraint journalism and complying with the directive to remove the content against the code of conduct.<\/p>\n
“We must verify the authenticity of any material before publishing or sharing it and refrain from disseminating material that affects religious, ethnic or communal harmony,” the statement said. <\/p>\n
According to the Council, 207 items were monitored so far and out of 90 content found to be against the code of conduct, 59 content of 34 media houses and two of unregistered social networking sites were directed to be removed.<\/p>\n
Among them, 31 media houses and two unregistered social media sites have removed their content following the directive. <\/p>\n
Likewise, out of 20 social networks not affiliated with the media, the Council has sent a letter to the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police for investigation and action against 25 contents of 18 social sites, while four media houses have been directed again. The Council has said that its serious attention has been drawn to the fact that some social media operators were found refusing to remove content affecting religious and communal harmony despite requesting them to remove the content as it was being monetized.<\/p>\n
“We are coordinating with the Cyber Bureau and the concerned authorities for necessary investigation and action against such content and related social media accounts,” the statement added. <\/p>\n
The Press Council has also urged all sides to exercise restraint, responsibility and human sensitivity, saying true and responsible information would help maintain peace in the society and that unconfirmed and provocative content could lead to social instability.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
