Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment, Geeta Chaudhary, on the occasion of the second National Millet Day, said all stakeholders should make joint efforts to strengthen food and nutrition security by increasing millet products. <\/p>\n
In a message of best wishes on the occasion of the 2nd National Millet Day-2083 being marked with the slogan ‘Millet Preservation and Promotion, Food and Nutrient Security Promotion’, Minister Chaudhary said that millet and other millet crops are important to maintain food and nutrition security and reduce the growing risk in agriculture sector due to climate change. She said that although millet has been cultivated and consumed in Nepal since tradition, its production and consumption have been decreasing in recent years due to various reasons.<\/p>\n
However, with the increase in public awareness about its multidimensional importance, the demand for millet crops has also increased. <\/p>\n
Stating that millet crops have an important role to play in food security, nutrition improvement, import substitution and increasing farmers’ income, Minister Chaudhary said the government has been implementing various policy and promotional programmes for production growth, productivity enhancement and commercialization. According to him, more than <\/p>\n
1,300 species of millet have been preserved in the National Gene Bank under the Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC). Similarly, the amendment to the Seed Act has simplified the provision of registering indigenous and local varieties with the National Seed Committee. <\/p>\n
Stating that the Indigenous Crops Promotion Programme and Agriculture Biodiversity Conservation Programme had been put in place in collaboration with the state and local levels for the past seven years, she said the use and marketing of millet products through school lunch, government offices and the private sector was increasing. In a message of best wishes, Minister Chaudhary said that farmers’ groups, cooperatives and community seed banks have been making significant contributions in the production, conservation and marketing of millet. She expressed the belief that the second National Millet Day would help increase the production and consumption by raising public awareness about the importance of millet crops as well as for food security and building sustainable agricultural systems.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
