On a recent day, a different scene was seen on the roadside in New Road, Kathmandu.<\/p>\n
A foreign woman from Russia, who goes by the name ‘Lira’, was actually seen as a beggar. The scene of smiling and playing a musical instrument (steel tongue drum handpan) asking for help <\/p>\n
has caught the attention of many. <\/p>\n
At first glance, she looks like an artist. Sitting on the roadside, she plays a black metal pot or handpan with Om written on it. There is always a glow and smile on the face. In a small bag kept with them, passersby are seen moving forward with money as per their wishes. <\/p>\n
The scene of sitting on the roadside and asking for help is not new in Nepal. But the sight of a foreign citizen playing music on the Nepali streets asking for help has become new to many. <\/p>\n
This scene has given a different message to the Nepali society where there is a general perception that foreigners become economically prosperous as soon as they see foreigners.<\/p>\n
Not only do they ask for it due to financial constraints, but some also adopt it as a part of their travel and lifestyle. <\/p>\n
The woman has a bag next to her to keep the donation money. One of the placards reads, “I am from Russia.” I have been traveling to different countries for the last five years. Now I am going to Uzbekistan. Thank you. She has also mentioned her Instagram ID in the placard. <\/p>\n
