While it is acceptable to change over time, it is a matter of concern that human values, morality and family relationships are weakened.

Dr. Chintamani Yogi

Culturalist and Spiritual Thinker

The crisis of morality and intimacy increased the despair in the society: Dr. Yogi

There was a lot of external change, Internal transformation could not take place: Dr. Chintamani Yogi

Kathmandu. Over the last three decades, Nepal has witnessed significant political and social changes, such as multiparty democracy, republicanism, federal governance and expansion of information technology.

But with these changes, there has been a drastic change in the expectations, dissatisfaction, social relations and lifestyle of the citizens.

There are growing complaints that the expectations of good governance, economic prosperity and social harmony have not been fulfilled. Social media, foreign employment, and excessive use of technology have affected family relationships and social intimacy.

In such a scenario, when the frustration and anger among the younger generation is increasing, culturalist, spiritual thinker and educationist Dr. Chintamani Yogi has said that despite the external change, the internal transformation of the society has not taken place.

In an exclusive conversation with Nepal News Bank, Minister Khatiwada said that frustration, dissatisfaction and stress were increasing among the citizens due to lack of morality, compassion, positive thinking and social trust along with the external changes. Stating that there are two sides to change, he said that although the political system, development model, technology and management structure are changing externally, the expected improvement in people’s thinking, culture and behavior has not taken place.

“Governments change, but cultures don’t. Unless there is change in thinking and nature, external change alone cannot make the society happy,” he said.

According to Dr. Yogi, one of the main reasons for the anger, dissatisfaction and unrest seen in the Nepali society today is the erosion of human values.

He said that the crisis of human relations, intimacy and morality was deepening across the globe and its impact was seen in Nepal as well.

Speaking about the growing influence of technology and social media, he said that while mobile phones and artificial intelligence (AI) have created some positive opportunities, their misuse has added challenges to families and society. According to him, parents are now unable to encourage their children to sleep, eat or even play outside on time.

‘Yantra was developed, but Mantra was not developed. The house was developed, but the awareness and harmony of the people living inside the house could not be developed,” he said. He said that the market and technology have created a situation where people are losing control over their time, interests and lifestyle. “I don’t want to see it, but I’m forced to watch. The market is making people not just consumers, sometimes slaves,” he said.

Commenting on the feelings of Nepalis living in different countries of the world towards Nepal, Dr. Yogi said that he has experienced that the love of Nepalis for the motherland deepens after reaching abroad. He said Nepalis living in different countries are trying to connect with Nepal through volunteerism, festivals, family rites and social activities. According to him, Non-Resident Nepalis are important possibilities and a source of hope for Nepal.

He said that the government and society should create an environment in which they can connect with Nepal more easily.

He shared his experience that he had been continuously interacting with the Nepali community in various countries including the US, Europe and Australia through religious, cultural and educational programs. He, however, urged Nepalis living abroad to avoid the tendency to consider themselves superior on the basis of their economic status or foreign citizenship.

“What makes it big is not the citizenship of the United States, but the character and attitude of a person,” he said.

He also criticized the tendency of constantly preaching through social media and commenting on Nepal.

He suggested that Nepalis living abroad should develop relations of cooperation, coexistence and coexistence with Nepal and not of rights.

“It is not that I have given to Mother Nepal, but the feeling that I have been able to do something for Mother Nepal,” he said, adding that Nepalis living abroad should be connected to the motherland with the feeling of sons and daughters, not with the feeling of rights. He was of the view that Nepal could experience real transformation only if society, state and citizens all introspect and strengthen human values, ethics and culture of cooperation.

Dr. Yogi said that serious social challenges will arise if the Nepali society fails to maintain a balance between development and culture in the era of modern technology and artificial intelligence. Stating that the main characteristics of Sanatan culture are flexibility, dynamism and generosity, he said that although changes could be accepted with time, the weakening of human values, morality and family relations was a matter of concern. According to him, with the increase in the reach of technology in today’s society, depression, depression, family distance and social ills are also increasing.

“We’re getting better, but the question is whether we’re good or not,” he said. He noted that although the younger generation is aware of the world happenings immediately, they are getting away from their own family, culture and traditions.

Dr. Yogi clarified that the technology itself is not wrong and the awareness and perspective of the people using it is important.

“Yantra is necessary, but without mantras, Yantra can become fatal. We need a livelihood, but if we lose our values, that livelihood can swallow people,” he said.

He said that AI should be understood not only as ‘Artificial Intelligence’ but also as ‘Ancestor Intelligence’, ‘Family Intelligence’, ‘Natural Intelligence’, ‘Emotional Intelligence’ and ‘Spiritual Intelligence’.

According to him, equal importance should be given to spirituality, yoga, meditation, health, morality and positive thinking along with modern development.

Speaking about the education system, he pointed out the need of value-based education, culture-based education, peace education and awareness-based education.

“Knowledge and technology alone are not enough.

If education is not related to morality and spiritual consciousness, then the same education can lead the society in the wrong direction,” he said.

Dr. Yogi has stressed on the need of using technology for human welfare by maintaining balance between modern lifestyle and Sanatan culture.

The main characteristics of Sanatan culture are flexibility, dynamism and generosity.
