Mugu. MUGU \u2014 A bridge over Gamgad River at Alkasanghu of Chhayanath Rara Municipality-1 in Mugu district has not come into operation for the past 18 months due to the dispute over compensation. Locals and passengers have been facing problems after the landowners closed the bridge citing that they have not received compensation for the land used for the bridge. <\/p>\n
Vehicles used to move through the river in winter after the bridge was not in operation. However, locals have not been able to walk on the bridge even after the water level in the river rose due to incessant rainfall in the recent days.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Division Road Office, Jumla, had constructed a 40-metre-long and 11-metre-wide bridge over Gamgad River at a cost of Rs 80 million. <\/p>\n
The bridge constructed by Him Sagarmatha Construction was completed 18 months ago but is yet to come into operation.<\/p>\n
Vehicular driver Sovan Singh Sarki said they have not been able to operate vehicles due to the rise in the river during the rainy season. Gyan Bahadur Malla, a local, said that students, women, senior citizens and patients have been facing difficulty in commuting due to lack of use of the bridge. Had the bridge come into operation, it would have been easier to travel 17 kilometers from Gamgadhi bazaar to Magridanda via Chhail Bazaar of Mugum Karmarong. <\/p>\n
Landowner Dhan Bahadur Malla said that the bridge was constructed on 588.75 square meters of arable land after two houses were swept away by the floods of 2079 BS.<\/p>\n
According to him, although the municipality and he had agreed to provide compensation on November 19, 2080 and Baisakh 13, 2081, the bridge was not implemented. <\/p>\n
Malla said that he would not obstruct the operation of the bridge as soon as he received the money, saying he had agreed to provide compensation with the municipality in recent time. Manjan Bahadur Karki, chief of the District Coordination Committee, Mugu, said that discussions were being held between the municipality and the landowners for the operation of the bridge.<\/p>\n
He said efforts are underway to resolve the problem within a few days and allow vehicular movement from the bridge. <\/p>\n
Last year, eight passengers were injured while crossing the river through a makeshift wooden sandhu built over the river after the bridge was not in operation.<\/p>\n
The bridge which is one of the important structures of the 87-km road project to connect Nepal and China has not come into operation since many years. Locals have demanded that the concerned bodies should resolve the compensation dispute at the earliest and bring the bridge into operation. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
