. Japan on Thursday marked the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The event, which commemorates the victims of the devastating events of World War II in 1945, called for a world free of nuclear weapons. <\/p>\n
Japanese public broadcaster NHK said Prime Minister Takeichi Sane, along with representatives of 123 countries and regions, attended the annual commemoration ceremony at Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park.<\/p>\n
The event paid tribute to those who died in the nuclear attack. <\/p>\n
During the ceremony, an updated list of the victims of the Hiroshima atomic bomb was placed on the memorial.<\/p>\n
The list includes the names of 353,639 people, including living victims (hibakusa) who died in the last one year. <\/p>\n
On August 6,<\/p>\n
1945, at 8:15 a. m., the United States dropped a uranium-based atomic bomb named ‘Little Boy’ on Hiroshima. The attack completely destroyed the city. It is estimated that by the end of 1945, about 140,000 people died from explosions, heat effects and radiation. <\/p>\n
On August 9, three days after the Hiroshima attacks, the US dropped the second atomic bomb ‘Fat Man’ on Nagasaki.<\/p>\n
On August 15, 1945, Japan surrendered, ending World War II. <\/p>\n
The survivors of the atomic bomb are known as ‘hibakusa’ in Japan.<\/p>\n
They have campaigned for the abolition of nuclear weapons for decades. But many radiation victims have battled cancer and other health problems throughout their lives, NHK said. <\/p>\n
There are still about 91,<\/p>\n
000 hibakusa alive in Japan, with an average age of 86 years. In recent years, the global security threat has increased and concerns about nuclear risk have increased. <\/p>\n
The expiration of the New START treaty between the United States and Russia in February and the failure of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference to approve a final document also added to the risks, NHK said.<\/p>\n
