Normal life has been affected due to shortage of cooking gas across the country. The problem of basic necessities such as cooking has been seen and its impact has been especially felt on daily wage workers, low-income families, the elderly, rented children and children.

As the issue is directly related to the daily life of the citizens, there is a demand that the bodies concerned should take immediate initiative to resolve the problem. According to the stakeholders, if the shortage is due to a lack of supply management, then it needs to be rectified quickly.

However, there is a growing demand for stern action against those involved in creating artificial scarcity, storing unnecessary stocks, black marketeering or irregularities in the distribution system.

Consumers have said that due to the shortage of gas, they have to stand in queues for hours, go to the market in search of cylinders and daily life is not acceptable. Civil society representatives have said that the state should be tough on anyone who plays with the basic needs of the people.

“The business of blocking people’s kitchens can also be stopped,” they said. They said the statement was not a threat but a sign of growing public discontent. They argue that when there is a crisis in basic necessities, it will naturally be countered through democratic and legal means.

The stakeholders have urged the government, administration, Nepal Oil Corporation, gas industry, distributors and all sides related to the supply system to pay serious attention to the project. They have also demanded to ensure smooth and regular supply of cooking gas, to take action against the guilty by conducting an impartial investigation if there was artificial shortage or black marketeering and to make the distribution system transparent and accountable to the people.

Meanwhile, the civil society has warned that if the trend of ignoring people’s problems or converting scarcity into business is not stopped, the civil society may launch more people’s pressure programs. If necessary, preparations could be made to picket the NOC, shift the gas line to the office of the concerned body and launch symbolic protest programmes.

According to civic leaders, the movement is not a desire but a compulsion. They said that the concerned side should resolve the problem on time as there is a limit to the patience of the people.

Stating that it would be in the interest of all sides to seek a solution at the earliest, they said that the situation of putting out people’s stove would not be acceptable for any responsible society. They have concluded that no business, profit or interest can be above the basic needs of the people.

Kathmandu.
