KATHMANDU: The Third International Conference on Mother Language Journalism kicked off in Kathmandu on Monday. The conference has been organized to discuss the development, promotion and protection of journalism in the mother tongue as well as the challenges seen in this sector. <\/p>\n<p> Journalists, journalists, media experts and representatives of different linguistic communities are participating in the conference. The program will discuss the issues of expanding access to communications through the use of mother tongues, preserving the linguistic identity and bringing the voices of local communities into the mainstream of communications. Nripendra Lal Shrestha, President of Newa Davu, welcomed the program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The conference was inaugurated in three different styles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>. The conference was inaugurated in three different ways. <\/p>\n<p> In the first phase of the program, Law Minister Sobita Gautam inaugurated the conference by lighting the lamp.<\/p>\n<p>The conference formally kicked off with the traditional lighting of lamps. <\/p>\n<p> Then the second edition of the conference was inaugurated by pouring water in a pot to convey the message of climate change. According to the organizers, this symbolic program has been organized to give a message linking the issues of environment protection and climate change with the mother tongue journalism. <\/p>\n<p> Similarly, the third edition of the conference was inaugurated by the Bon Method&#8217;s Lama Lamas chanting mantras in their mother tongue.<\/p>\n<p>The inauguration was organized with the chanting of mantras to highlight the relation among mother tongue, culture, tradition and religious practice. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion on Challenges of Mother Language Journalism<\/strong><\/p>\n<p> The conference will discuss various challenges faced by journalists while doing journalism in mother tongue. According to the organizers, the issues of human resources, technology and financial management required for the production and publication of communication materials in mother tongues will also be raised with priority. <\/p>\n<p> The participants said that Nepal is a multilingual and multicultural country and it is necessary to develop communication in the mother tongues of different communities.<\/p>\n<p>They are of the view that dissemination of news and information in the mother tongue can effectively highlight the issues, problems, culture and identity of the local community. <\/p>\n<p>Mother tongue journalism is also an important means of preserving and transmitting the language to the people&#8217;s language.<\/strong><strong>Stakeholders are of the view that the use of mother tongue can be increased through media at a time when the use of mother tongue is decreasing in the new generation. It is expected that with the expansion of the use of mother tongue in journalism, the citizens of the community would get opportunity to receive information in their own language and ownership towards their language and culture would also increase. The conference will also discuss the issues of strengthening the media operated in mother tongues in professional and institutional manner, capacity building of journalists and expanding access of mother-language contents through the use of digital technology. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Expansion of mother tongue in digital medium <\/strong><\/p>\n<p> In recent times, new opportunities have been created for mother tongue journalism with the expansion of digital platforms including online media, social media, videos, podcasts. <\/p>\n<p> The conference will also give priority to the use of mother tongue on digital platforms along with traditional media. It is expected that there would be exchange of experiences among the participants on the issues of producing quality digital materials in the mother tongues to reach out to the new generation as well as on the preservation and promotion of languages through the use of technology. <\/p>\n<p>The organizer <\/strong> s believe that the conference will contribute to developing an inclusive communication system by establishing linguistic diversity as the unique feature of Nepal.<strong><\/p>\n<p> The conference will also discuss the need to give priority to the issue of mother tongue journalism at the policy-making level along with collaboration and experience sharing among the journalists involved in the mother tongue journalism.
