Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minority and Social Security Sita Badi held extensive discussion at the Ministry today regarding the need to gradually expand the national campaign to end the dowry system. <\/p>\n
During the discussion, the discussions were held on the necessary opinions, suggestions and cooperation to make the national campaign against dowry system effective.<\/p>\n
Discussions were also held on starting the campaign from Madhes and gradually expanding it across the country and taking the campaign to the community level. <\/p>\n
Stating that the dowry system is a serious social evil linked to economic and social exploitation, gender discrimination and domestic violence against women, it was stressed the need of bringing change in social thinking and behaviour along with the effective implementation of the legal system to end it. Minister Badi said that the dowry-free Nepal should be taken up as a common national campaign of the entire society and not only the responsibility of the government.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Youths, women, local level, educational institutions, social and religious leaders, civil society and media should be involved in the campaign by spreading awareness against dowry, she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Stating that earlier discussions were held with Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ruby Kumari, on ending the dowry system and the ‘<\/p>\n
dowry-free Nepal’ campaign, Minister Badi said that the campaign would be taken forward on the basis of feedback received after holding discussion and consultation with other stakeholders in the days to come.\u00a0<\/p>\n
During the meeting, the Madhesi Commission presented its suggestions on the issues faced by women and children in Madhes such as child marriage, domestic and gender-based violence, lack of access to education and health, violence on the charge of witchcraft, child labour and child exploitation, human trafficking and citizenship and identity-related problems and low participation of women in decision-making process. Discussions were also held on developing the culture of ‘no dowry, no taking, not giving’ culture to end the dowry system, continuous public awareness expansion at the community level, increasing the leadership and participation of youths and effective coordination and collaboration among the federal, province and local levels.<\/p>\n
The Ministry has said that the ‘Dowry-Free Nepal’ campaign will be gradually launched across the country by incorporating the suggestions received by incorporating the suggestions received from the stakeholders in the coming days. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
