Expansion of transmission system is essential to increase electricity export: Energy Minister <\/strong><\/p>\n
Kathmandu Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, has insisted on balanced and coordinated development of transmission and distribution infrastructures along with production, to develop Nepal’s energy sector as the major basis for economic transformation. <\/p>\n Speaking in the program organized on the occasion of the 11th anniversary of the National Transmission Grid Company Limited (NEGRID Company Limited), Minister Shrestha said that Nepal has entered the decisive phase of electricity generation, transmission, internal consumption and expansion of inter-country power trade.<\/p>\n He stressed the need of according top priority to the construction of a modern, reliable, safe and adequate capacity transmission system to take full benefit of electricity production. <\/p>\n Stating that the expected economic return could not be achieved from the energy sector only by increasing electricity production, he stressed the need of integrated development of generation, transmission and distribution infrastructures.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n “The increase in electricity generation is a positive achievement, but if the electricity produced cannot be reliably transmitted and consumption cannot be increased in the productive sector, then its full economic benefits cannot be realized,” he said. Minister Shrestha said the government has adopted the policy of developing electricity as a major driver of industrialization, employment generation, production growth and overall economic transformation.<\/p>\n For this, necessary policy and infrastructure arrangements would be made to increase electricity consumption in industry, agriculture, irrigation, electric transport, information technology and other productive sectors, he said. <\/p>\n He said that there is ample potential of earning foreign currency and contributing to national economy by exporting electricity by exporting surplus electricity that cannot be consumed in the country.<\/p>\n He opined that the hydropower potential of Nepal could be a significant basis of country’s economic prosperity if it could be linked to the regional energy market. <\/p>\n Minister Shrestha also stressed on the need of mobilizing public sector, private sector, development partners, financial institutions and international cooperation in an effective manner, while stressing the need of investing in a big way for the expansion of high capacity transmission lines, substations and cross-country transmission infrastructure.
