The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has objected to the arrest of journalist Shrestha <\/strong>.KATHMANDU: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has expressed serious concern over the arrest of senior journalist and editor-in-chief of Jana Aastha Weekly Kishor Shrestha over a news related issue. <\/p>\n According to the FNJ, a team from the Kathmandu Police Range arrested Shrestha from his residence in Lalitpur at around 9 pm on August 10. Issuing a press release on Thursday, the FNJ stated that arresting journalists using government mechanisms and searching for sources of news is against freedom of the press and expression, journalists’ code of conduct and the constitution.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Stating that the Press Council Nepal has the right to regulate and initiate necessary process if one is not satisfied with the content published in the news, the FNJ has concluded that arresting journalists by using government mechanism and searching the source of news is against the press freedom and freedom of expression, journalist code of conduct and the constitution.<\/p>\n ‘Press Council Nepal has jurisdiction to look into the issues that are not satisfied with the news. “The FNJ believes that such behaviour against journalist Shrestha by misusing government machinery is against press freedom, freedom of expression, journalist code of conduct and the constitution,” reads the statement. <\/p>\n The FNJ said the incident had struck at the democratic norms and the global norms of a free press. Expressing regret over the government’s attitude, the FNJ has strongly condemned the incident. <\/p>\n The FNJ believes that this incident has attacked democratic norms and the universal norms of a free press.
