Addressing the 59th annual general meeting of Nepal Tour and Travel Agents Association (NATTA) on Friday, Minister Poudel said that although Nepal is rich in natural and cultural heritages, it has not been able to achieve the expected achievement from tourism sector due to policy-level and structural weaknesses.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
He said, “If there is only <\/p>\n
one possibility for the overall development of Nepal, it is in tourism.” We are endowed with all the natural and cultural things needed for the tourism industry. However, due to some of our policy and structural weaknesses, we have not been able to achieve the desired results. He said that the Ministry is serious about the VAT levied on air tickets, the rights and commissions of IATA affiliated businessmen and the Agency Debit Memo (ADM).<\/p>\n
“The Ministry is very sensitive to the issues of VAT levied on air tickets, the Commission on the Rights of Businessmen and the Agency Debit Memo (ADM),” he said, adding, “Although VAT cannot be removed immediately as we are on the verge of delivering the budget speech in a short time, I am doing my homework to take it to a logical conclusion next year.” Stressing on the need of incorporating suggestions from the private sector while amending the Tourism Act, Minister Poudel said that some important issues have been left out in the bill.<\/p>\n
“My request to all my friends from the private sector is to take a closer look at whether our tourism bill has addressed the difficulties and policy problems related to your respective businesses,” he said. “Discussions are underway to make NATH, the only government institution to study tourism in Nepal, to make it more effective and expand it to all seven provinces,” he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Minister Poudel also informed that directives have been issued to run bachelor’s and master’s level studies from this year, giving priority to health tourism. Stating that it was difficult to bring the expected improvement from the current structure and working style of the Nepal <\/p>\n
Tourism Board, he said that the investment of the Board would be focused on infrastructure and promotion. <\/p>\n
Stating that the condition of the national flag carrier Nepal Airlines Corporation was pathetic, Minister Poudel said that the corporation should be taken to the public-private partnership model. He also said that the government has taken serious note of the European Union’s inclusion of Nepal’s air service providers in the aviation safety list. Stating that good governance was the first basis for prosperity, Minister Poudel said the government was committed to formulating private sector-friendly policies <\/p>\n
