Kathmandu. The government has deployed 7,992 police personnel in the flood-affected areas till Tuesday for the search for people, protection of life and property, rescue and relief management. <\/p>\n
A large number of police teams from different provinces and units have been deployed to address the multi-dimensional problems in the affected areas and to reduce the risk of possible disasters. Among the police personnel deployed, 1,602 are deployed from the Police Headquarters, 2,182 from Bagmati Province Police Office, 1,309 from Gandaki Province, 640 from Lumbini Province and 754 from Kathmandu Valley Police Office. Similarly, 397 police personnel have been deployed from Police Hospital Maharajgunj, 450 from RPP Maharajgunj, 356 from Police Academy and 222 from Prayutake Jargah. <\/p>\n
An ‘Emergency Coordination Center’ has been set up at the Police Headquarters for effective performance in the flood-affected areas. Similarly, a ‘Disaster Rescue and Coordination Information Management Center’ has also been formed under the leadership of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) for all the work related to this disaster and data management. <\/p>\n
Focal desks and security arrangements at hospitals and airports<\/p>\n
Police are fulfilling the institutional responsibility by setting up ‘Focal Desks’ at hospitals and airports for the treatment of the injured and coordinating with the families of the deceased during the disaster. Similarly, special police teams led by Deputy Superintendents of Police have been deployed in various hospitals, including Kathmandu, where the injured are being treated and the bodies are being collected. A total of 30 policemen have been deployed at Bir Hospital, 13 at Civil Hospital and 5 at Kathmandu Medical College. A total of 62 police personnel have been deployed at Tribhuvan Teaching Hospital under the leadership of Deputy Inspector General of Police. A desk has been set up at Tribhuvan International Airport under the leadership of a Superintendent of Police to manage the bodies of domestic and foreign nationals and prepare the details of the injured. <\/p>\n
Likewise, 8 police personnel led by the Superintendent of Police (SP) have been deployed at the desk for the management of dead bodies of domestic and foreign citizens and the preparation of the details of the injured. <\/p>\n
Scientific Research and Use of Technology <\/p>\n
Technology has been used to speed up search and research work in the flood-affected areas. A total of 12 drones have been deployed in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading. Surveillance and search with the help of drones is also being done in remote areas where foot patrolling is difficult. <\/p>\n
Similarly, 5 trained dogs have been deployed for search operations and 7 satellite phones have been used for information sharing in remote areas where communication has been lost. A total of 67 police personnel have been deployed for on-the-spot investigation and investigation work and 715 police personnel have been deployed in various districts for identification and management of dead bodies. A team of ‘Scene of Crime Officer’ and a special team of forensic experts have been deployed in the affected areas for scientific examination including DNA of the dead bodies. A team of specialist doctors from Nepal Police Hospital has also been deployed in the affected areas for immediate treatment of the injured. <\/p>\n
Arrest of those involved in crimes and frauds committed during the floods <\/p>\n
The police have tightened the security cordon to control the chaotic activities like theft, robbery and fraud that take place immediately after the floods. In this process, the accused involved in inhuman activities have been arrested from various districts. <\/p>\n
After a video of a woman being swept away by the Narayani River went viral on social media, the Chitwan Police arrested Madan Gurung, 25, and Umesh Chaudhary, 38, of Madanpur, Chitwan. Police have said that such looting and inhuman activities on the victims during a disaster will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Police have also arrested 29 locals for allegedly misappropriating Rs 92,68,505 from the bank of the Trishuli River at Belkhukhola of Galchhi-4 in Dhading district. Police also arrested Srijan Karki, 32, of Gokulganga-2, Ramechhap district on the charge of extorting money from flood victims through Facebook. <\/p>\n
Similarly, while cleaning the road at Galchi-6, Baireni Bazaar, a closed safe measuring 19 inches long and 16 inches wide was found buried with sand and mud, which has been kept safe at the Police Post Baireni. Another safe has been found on the banks of the Malekhu Trishuli River while efforts are on to retrieve another safe seen in the Malekhu River. <\/p>\n
Physical Damage and Obstruction Situation <\/p>\n
Police have paid special attention to reduce the possible risk as the flood flow is descending from the hills to the Terai. A total of 757 police personnel have been deployed around the Narayani River in Chitwan alone. In addition, the police are also active in removing the physical obstacles and managing the materials found. <\/p>\n
In this sensitive time of disaster, the Nepal Police is continuously working for the safety of the citizens, facilitating the distribution of relief and rescuing the victims. The police are also conducting various community awareness programs urging the citizens of the affected areas to remain patient. <\/p>\n
