Bhotekoshi floods: 1,114 bodies recovered, 3,900 still missing<\/p>\n

Kathmandu The government has intensified search, rescue and relief operations following the unprecedented floods in the Bhotekoshi River area on August 26. Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lok Bahadur Poudel Chhetri, said that so far 1,114 bodies have been recovered, around 3,900 people are still missing and 11,993 have been rescued. More than <\/p>\n
300 of the rescued are foreign nationals, according to the ministry. Five of them are said to be safe after coming in contact. At the same time, about 590 foreign nationals from 34 countries are still missing, said spokesperson Chhetri. The ministry said that these figures may change as the search and identification work is going on. <\/p>\n
Spokesperson Chhetri urged the media and the general public to base only on the officially confirmed details. He said that the updated information will be made public through the concerned government agencies including the Ministry, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, Nepal Tourism Board. <\/p>\n
Rescue teams of Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force along with Indian, Chinese and South Korean rescue teams have continued their search and rescue operations. On August 29, the Nepal Army and Indian rescue teams conducted preliminary inspections in the Langtang and Chilime areas. The next day, the rescue team entered the tunnel towards Langtang about 150 meters but could not find any human or dead bodies. The search operation is underway as further sections of the tunnel are blocked, the ministry said. Another joint team from Chilime entered the tunnel some 20 meters into the tunnel but did not find any human or dead bodies. The Nepal Army and Chinese rescue teams have searched the tunnel about 200 meters inside the tunnel using boats in the northern Trishuli area. The work will be continued with the help of additional equipment. South Korean rescue teams have also been deployed in the area, the ministry said. Attempts were made to construct an exit at the end of the tunnel of the Trishuli-3 ‘A’ project using three excavators including compressor and rock breaker. However, due to the high flow of water, it was difficult to search from there, so efforts are being made to construct an alternative exit from the outer part of the tunnel. The Nepal Army, with the help of the technical team of the project, has identified the project office and residential area in Trishuli-3 ‘B’. Currently, the work of restoring the access road is being done using excavators. According to the ministry, the Nepal Army and the technical team of the project entered the tunnel at Rasuwagadhi within 200 meters and searched for it, but no human or dead body was found. The search operation is underway as the inner part of the tunnel is completely blocked. Nepal Police has intensified DNA testing with the help of a team of foreign experts to identify the bodies found in the floods. <\/p>\n
A 19-member forensic team from India is analyzing DNA samples in collaboration with Nepal Police. A five-member special forensic team from China has also arrived in Nepal. <\/p>\n
Meanwhile, a 6-member Disaster Victim Identification Team has arrived in Nepal from Singapore.<\/p>\n
According to the ministry, an additional 13-member team with DNA testing equipment will arrive in Nepal on Wednesday. More members will join the team on Thursday with high-capacity drones and other necessary equipment. <\/p>\n
South Korea’s additional forensic team has also been involved in the search and identification work with the necessary equipment. The ministry has requested the international community to provide lidar equipment, bailey bridges, freezers for dead bodies, DNA testing kits, transport vehicles, mortuary bags, high-capacity drones, and gene sequencers to make the search and rescue efforts effective. The Ministry has said that relief and humanitarian assistance is being effectively mobilized in the flood-affected areas.<\/p>\n
Further relief materials and assistance from international partners and friendly countries are continuing. <\/p>\n
Spokesperson Chhetri said that the details of the materials required in the flood-affected areas and the assistance received and announced from the international community have been updated and the list would be made public soon. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Government of China has facilitated the return of Nepali and foreign nationals stranded in Tibet of China due to floods. <\/p>\n
Out of the estimated 3,000 people who were on their way to Kailash Parbat during the floods, about 2,500 people, mostly pilgrims, have returned to Nepal through Hilsa and Tatopani border points. The rest have also been facilitated to return home and some Nepalis are returning from Lhasa via air, the ministry said. <\/p>\n

1,500 Nepalese are currently in Kerung. We are coordinating with the Chinese side to bring them back home at the earliest. <\/p>\n
According to the Ministry, they are coordinating with the Chinese authorities to change the route to bring 176 Nepali trucks and containers from Kerung to Nepal through appropriate border points. Likewise, around <\/p>\n
100 Nepalis went missing along the border with China on the day of the floods. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
