Information reaches from one corner of the world to the other in an instant. We are connected with people who are far away through social media. But the irony is that as technology brings people closer, human sensibilities sometimes feel distant. <\/p>\n The country is currently in pain due to natural disasters such as floods, landslides, inundations, etc. Some families have lost their loved ones, some have lost their homes, and some have lost their life’s earnings in an instant. Some people have no stove in their homes, some are worried about safe shelter, some are worried about the treatment of injured relatives. In such a situation, there are not only tears in the eyes of the victims, but there is also a silent question, ‘Who will come to save us, sustain and support us?’ In such difficult times, we should ask ourselves a question: Are we still alive as human beings? <\/p>\n It is not unusual to argue about who is to blame during a disaster. It is necessary to review the role and weakness of the government, local level, security agencies, civil society and all the stakeholders in disaster management. But it is not humane to give priority to blame and counter-blame when the life of the victim is at risk. Today, if someone’s house is washed away, it is not just his personal problem. Today, if there is a death in someone’s family, it is not just the sorrow of one family. The pain of a citizen is ultimately the pain of the entire society. During a disaster, the question of how to save a life, how to give relief to a family and how to wipe the tears of the victim should be more important than the competition of who to abuse, who to blame and who to show weakness on social media. <\/p>\n We talk big about humanity, compassion, patriotism and cooperation on social media. We write tributes, express sympathy and say ‘we are all with the victims’ in tragic incidents. But the question arises, how much has our words and actions changed? Humanity should be seen not in words, but in actions. Compassion should not be seen in social media status, but in the help shown when needed. Patriotism should be seen not only in speeches, but in the behavior of standing with the countrymen when they are in distress. Sometimes a phone call, a bottle of water, a blanket, a few kilos of food, a safe vehicle, a few hours of volunteering or just listening carefully to the victim can be a great humanitarian help. The value of help is not its size, but it is meaningful when it is determined by the impact that the help has on someone’s life. <\/p>\n When we say help in times of disaster, we often think of financial assistance. Financial assistance is very important, but the scope of humanity is not limited to that. Let those who can give money provide financial assistance, those who can provide labor should volunteer, those who have vehicles should help in rescue and relief. Let those who have technical knowledge use their expertise, those who have access to communication, let them disseminate the right information, those who have influence should raise their voice to mobilize help, and those who do not have any of these should at least not spread misinformation, rumors and hatred. Sometimes not being able to help is not a big weakness, but it is a big weakness to be insensitive even when you can help. <\/p>\n Today, social media can be an important means of relief and rescue.<\/p>\n But it can also be a medium to showcase misinformation, rumours, unconfirmed news and the vulnerability of victims. <\/p>\n The grief of the victims should not be made into entertainment or social media content. Pictures and videos of the dead and injured should not be circulated unnecessarily. Spread unconfirmed information should not create more panic in the family. Sharing the right information on any medium can save a life, and a false information can even endanger a life. Therefore, we all need to be responsible as journalists, social media users and citizens for the disaster. <\/p>\n Disaster management is the main responsibility of the state. The state machinery should be effectively mobilized for rescue, treatment, relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction. The affected citizens should not have to seek access, identity or political connections for relief. But the responsibility of the citizen does not end just because it is the responsibility of the state. Disaster management cannot be done by the government alone. The joint efforts of the local community, security agencies, health workers, NGOs, private sector, media, volunteers, Nepalis and common citizens are needed. In times of disaster, there is no distance between the government and the citizens, cooperation is essential. The victim is not to blame, but support. The saddest thing is that even the people who are suffering from the disaster are blamed for their condition or weakness. Questions like ‘Why did you stay there?’, ‘Why did you build a house there?’, ‘Why did you not leave on time?’ do not heal the wounds of the victim. A person experiencing a disaster needs support before teaching. He needs a safe place, not a fault. He needs food, not criticism. We need medicine, not political speech. We need real help, not just social media. Today there is a disaster in someone else’s house, tomorrow it can happen in our house too. Natural disasters do not care about caste, religion, class, region, ideology or political beliefs. When there is a flood, water can enter everyone’s house. Position, prestige and property cannot always provide protection when a landslide falls. Today, we may be sitting in a safe place and watching the suffering of others. But tomorrow the situation may be different. Today, the person we are helping, tomorrow we may also need someone’s helping hand. Therefore, human compassion is not just a donation for others. It is the basis of our common existence. <\/p>\n In this hour of disaster, we can all do something according to our capacity and situation. Let’s provide financial support according to our capacity. Let’s deliver relief materials to the needy. Donate blood. Participate in volunteerism. Provide our own vehicles or vehicles for rescue and relief. Collect and disseminate information only from credible agencies. Stop spreading rumors and hatred. Respect the self-respect and privacy of the victims. And most importantly, develop a culture of considering each other’s suffering as our own. <\/p>\n This hour of disaster is not only a time of sorrow for all of us, but also a time to measure our humanity. History will not remember our speeches, our status painted on social media. What history remembers is, where did we stand during the crisis? Did we become a crowd watching the spectacle or did we become human beings engaged in rescue? What is needed today is not to blame each other, but to hold each other’s hands. What is needed is not political division, but human unity.
