Kathmandu. Due to the devastating floods in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa, 93 employees and workers of the Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Project have been out of contact for the past 10 days. They went missing after the flash flood that occurred at around 8:40 am on August 26 caused major damage to the dam site, powerhouse and staff quarters of the project. <\/p>\n
According to Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Company Limited, 51 permanent employees, the company’s director Sunau Audi Tamang and his wife, two daily wage earners and 39 contractors were among those who went missing. Although some local employees who were at the project site managed to escape and save their lives, a large number of other employees were caught in the floods as they could not move to safety. <\/p>\n
The flood has caused unimaginable damage to the structure of the project. The mud and stones that came with the floods have destroyed the dam site, site office, power house and transmission line. The company said that it is difficult to identify the condition of the employees who may have been trapped inside the transformer cavern and the powerhouse in particular. <\/p>\n
Immediately after the incident, the company started the search and rescue operation with the help of helicopter and the Nepal Army. Rescue teams of the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and private sector have been deployed since the day of the floods. Although a team was sent by helicopter of Fishtail Air for the rescue, the search operation has been hampered due to adverse weather and geographical remoteness. The company has set up a ‘help desk’ at its office in Kathmandu and has made arrangements to inform the families of the victims. <\/p>\n
Skilled rock climbers from the ‘Nepal National Mountain Guide Association’ and ‘Himalaya Summit Club’ have also been mobilized for the rescue. However, due to the large amount of mud and stones accumulated inside the powerhouse, there is a problem in transporting the equipment inside. Although the rescue team of the Nepal Army conducted recce in some parts of the powerhouse till September 20, the condition of any of the employees has not been ascertained. <\/p>\n
The company said it has intensified the search operation in coordination with the Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Home Affairs, Nepal Electricity Authority and District Administration Office. Even after 10 days of the floods, a large number of employees are still out of contact, which is causing concern and anger among the family members.
