All football matches in Argentina this weekend will be stopped for a minute in the 10th minute as a mark of respect to the great Lionel Messi who announced his retirement from the national team. <\/p>\n
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) announced that Messi’s contribution to the national team will be recognised by clapping for 60 seconds in the 10th minute of the first half in both the men’s and women’s divisions. <\/p>\n
The AFA has also instructed the federation to display the association’s institutional video before the start of the match in the stadium where there are big screens. The award in the 10th minute is a reference to the famous number 10 jersey that Messi has worn for a long time. <\/p>\n
The 39-year-old Messi announced his retirement from the national team on Monday. He made his debut for Argentina’s senior team in 2005 and holds the record for the most players playing and scoring the most goals for the national team. Messi’s first year of his national team career was disappointing. <\/p>\n
He lost to Germany in the 2014 World Cup final and lost to Chile in the 2016 Copa America final. But in 2021, he won the Copa America and gave Argentina a major international title after 28 years. <\/p>\n
Then he achieved the biggest success of his career by making Argentina the world champion at the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Messi scored two goals in the World Cup final against France. He also scored in the penalty shootout after the match ended in a 3-3 draw after extra time. Argentina won the World Cup 4-2 on penalties. <\/p>\n
Argentina then defended the Copa America title in 2024 and achieved another major international success under Messi. Messi’s World Cup journey spanned six seasons from 2006 to 2026. He has scored 21 goals in 34 matches at the World Cup. <\/p>\n
In the 2026 World Cup, he scored eight goals and four assists. In the same tournament, he also scored his first World Cup hat-trick against Algeria. Messi, who has won the Ballon d’Or eight times, has retired from the national team but will continue club football. He is playing for American Major League Soccer (MLS) club Inter Miami. <\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Messi took to social media to say that although the decision to leave the national team was painful for his soul, it was the right time.
