A generation of Nepali youths who took to the streets on September 23 a year ago did not just raise their voice against the ban on social media. At its inner level, there was long-accumulated resentment against corruption, injustice, discrimination, political irregularities and distrust of the public institutions of the state. <\/p>\n That discontent exploded on the streets. The movement suffered huge human losses. Dozens of youths lost their lives. In the days that followed, the violence and destruction in various parts of the country further complicated the political developments. <\/p>\n On the completion of one year of the Genji movement, the leader of the movement, Rabi Kiran Hamal, has raised serious questions about its objective, achievement, current political situation and future challenges. <\/p>\n In an exclusive conversation with Nepal News Bank on the occasion of Genji Day, Hamal described the last one year as a ‘tragic year’ in Nepal’s political life. According to him, from the death of youths during the agitation to the weakening of faith in various structures and public institutions of the country, it has to be seen as a single development. <\/p>\n ‘In the last one year, from the 23rd of Nepal till today, we have spent a lot of horrible days. Many people were also killed in the movement. Dozens of people were shot dead. After that, the country was burnt to ashes,” Hamal said. <\/p>\n He claimed that the Jenji movement was not born suddenly but developed out of long-standing discontent and the question of freedom of expression. He said that the voice raised by the youth against corruption, injustice and discrimination from protesting against the ban on social media eventually turned into a street movement. He also recalled that on the eve of the movement, they held a press conference and called on the youth to come out on the streets. <\/p>\n “On the 22nd, we held a press conference and called on all the countrymen to support it and the youths to take to the streets, and we participated on the 23rd,” Hamal said. <\/p>\n ‘There was an active gang to make the movement violent’ <\/p>\n Hamal has accused the Jenji movement of being deliberately violent. He has linked the suppression of the movement and the subsequent destruction to the same forces and developments. <\/p>\n “The manner in which dozens of Nepali youths were killed, then there was an active gang that was active in a planned manner to turn the movement into violence and take it towards confrontation, it has been flashed by the Human Rights Commission and other commissions and the media,” he said. <\/p>\n He accused the same forces of playing a role in the post-movement destruction. “On the one hand, the forces that made the movement violent, forced people to die, suppressed the state, and created conditions for confrontation from here, turned the entire country to ashes the next day,” Hamal said. <\/p>\n In this context, he raised questions about Sushila Karki, the then and present political leadership and the incident of prisoner escape from jail. He claimed that the group that attacked the soul of this country is why he is now leading. <\/p>\n “The forces that reduced this country to ashes, the group that attacked the soul of this country, the sovereignty, is now leading,” he said. <\/p>\n ‘The purpose of the Genji movement has not been fulfilled’ <\/p>\n According to Hamal, not all the youths involved in the movement have the same view about its political objectives and long-term consequences. He said that due to the large age group, the understanding of the movement is different even within the Genji generation. <\/p>\n “Gen-G is said to be 12 to 28 years old, how can all the youths of 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 years of age have this political consciousness?” he asked. <\/p>\n He said that the youths who have formed political consciousness and perspective by participating in the movement have been continuously raising their voices saying that the country should not deviate from its main objective. According to him, the main demands of the movement were not limited to controlling corruption. The main objectives were restructuring of public institutions, transparent governance, rule of law and creating economic opportunities. <\/p>\n ‘Especially the five of Nepal: the judiciary, bureaucracy, security agencies, universities and diplomatic institutions. It should be restructured and reformed in a comprehensive manner,” he said. <\/p>\n He said that the country cannot make sustainable progress unless the public institutions are strong. Hamal said that the country will move forward only when the public institutions are in the right place in any country. <\/p>\n Question to the government: “What is good?” <\/p>\n Hamal has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the performance of the government formed after the Jenji movement. Questioning what the government has achieved, he said that only the external presentation of the leadership cannot be considered an achievement. <\/p>\n ‘Is it good, is it good? Whether the glasses worn by the Prime Minister are good, or the coat he wears, whether the shoes are good, what is good? What did they do?” he asked. <\/p>\n He said that the incidents of violence after the formation of the government, incidents of squatters and migration of youths abroad should be linked with the performance of the government.<\/p>\n “Today, Nepali youths are losing faith in public institutions,” Hamal said. <\/p>\n He argues that the increasing number of youths going abroad also indicates that opportunities are not being created in the country. <\/p>\n ‘If you look at the past ratio, 65,000 people left the country in a month, now it has reached 70,000-72,000. Can you call it good?” he asked. <\/p>\n “The government does not have a clear direction ,” he said, adding that the incumbent government does not have a clear economic and institutional vision to take the country forward. <\/p>\n “The initial step should be ‘This is our way’. There is no clear vision or way from the government that the country wants economically, wants to restructure public institutions in this way, wants to promote entrepreneurship in the country, and uplifts the country by making Nepali youths self-employed,” he said. <\/p>\n He has also been criticized for having different views within the government. <\/p>\n “The Finance Minister will talk one thing, the Prime Minister will write a Facebook status and then remove it saying ‘No’, another minister will talk about another, the entire cabinet is not able to move in one direction,” Hamal said. <\/p>\n ‘Parliament is on deathbed’ <\/p>\n He also raised serious questions on the role of Nepal’s parliament. He accused the parliament of failing to raise the voice of the people and also failing to address the issues raised by the government. <\/p>\n ‘Parliament is dead, now Nepal’s parliament is on its deathbed. It has not been able to raise the issues of the people in that parliament and the parliament has not been able to address the issues raised by the government,” he said. <\/p>\n He warned that due to this situation, the country could again go towards a political crisis. “It may soon collapse and Nepal may go through a major political crisis again,” Hamal said. <\/p>\n ‘On the 23rd, we should come out on the streets to give the message of national unity’<\/p>\n On the occasion of the completion of one year of the Jenji movement, he appealed to the citizens across the country to come out on the streets on September 7. He paid tribute to the damage caused by floods and landslides in Rasuwa and other areas in recent times and said that respect should be paid to those who lost their lives and injured in the agitation. He said that he is also in constant dialogue with the families of the martyrs and the injured. <\/p>\n “I want all the people of Kathmandu to come down and express solidarity and participate. I wish that the movement across the country will come out on the streets in a way to embrace it,” Hamal said. <\/p>\n “We should understand the reason for the sacrifice ,” Hamal said, adding that although relief to the martyrs’ families, medical treatment and employment to the injured were necessary, the main objective of the agitation was not limited to that. <\/p>\n “Giving respect to the martyr’s family, providing employment, an environment to live with dignity and providing treatment and relief to the injured are secondary matters. That is the responsibility after the incident has happened,” he said. <\/p>\n According to him, the main question is why the youth took to the streets and why they made sacrifices. <\/p>\n “Why people were ready to go on the streets and take bullets, why they lost their hands and legs, why people went on the streets and what they went for. The current leadership seems to be going out and out, ignoring the spirit of that movement,” Hamal said. <\/p>\n ‘The state should not take revenge’ <\/p>\n He stressed that the people in the leadership of the state should not take political vendetta. He said that those who lead the government should play the role of guardians of all citizens. <\/p>\n ‘No one should think of revenge. If the people in the leadership of the state start taking revenge, it will be an inhumane, cruel and disgusting act. <\/p>\n ‘All forces should sit together and review’ <\/p>\n As the way forward, Hamal has proposed to rise above the political disputes of the time and review the constitution, public institutions and state structure in a comprehensive manner. <\/p>\n “All the forces should sit together and review the obstacles in the constitution, public institutions and structures and chart a long-term direction,” he said. <\/p>\n He stressed on the need to make a long-term roadmap for the country. Hamal said that the country should be taken towards rapid economic growth and equitable distribution by drawing a roadmap of 50 years and 100 years. <\/p>\n But he expressed doubts that such a long-term change would be possible with the current leadership and parliament. Hamal warned that Nepal may have to face political, economic, disaster and geopolitical crises simultaneously in the coming days.<\/p>\n “I call upon all the countrymen and youths to be ready to give the right direction to the country by resolving the political, economic, disaster and geopolitical crisis that the country is going to face,” he said. <\/p>\n According to him, the Genji movement should be evaluated not only by the immediate political changes it brings, but also by the questions it raises and the changes in the state structure it seeks.
