At least 43 people have died and 519 are still missing in a landslide at Kerung Port in Shigatse city of Sijang on August 26. Rescue operations are underway. <\/p>\n
The landslide blocked a three-kilometer section of China’s G216 National Highway, the only road leading to the port. <\/p>\n
This highway is the only land route to reach the Kerung border port with Nepal. After the road was blocked, rescuers had to reach the site by helicopter or walk for hours through dangerous mountainous terrain. <\/p>\n
After a week-long rescue team cleared the debris and reopened the road, it was possible to move heavy equipment, relief materials and additional manpower to the affected areas since last Wednesday. <\/p>\n
However, as the possibility of the second wave of disasters, such as more landslides and other geological risks, remains, the authorities are surveying and continuously monitoring the vulnerable areas by mobilizing various teams to keep this important road safe and operational. <\/p>\n
Teams have identified 58 locations with potential geological hazards along the relevant section of the highway. Monitoring equipment has been installed at these places to get immediate information about possible incidents of landslides or landslides. <\/p>\n
Yuan Yunxing, deputy head of the National Safe Products Emergency Rescue Survey Team, said, “We have installed radars in suitable places to monitor the steep roadside areas. If there is an incident of falling rocks or landslides, we will immediately inform the command center.” The command center will then coordinate with the relevant departments to control traffic on the road section or take further cleaning and protection measures.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, road authorities have intensified on-site inspections in the most vulnerable areas and strengthened roadside slopes to ensure the safe movement of rescue vehicles. <\/p>\n
Ga Ridi, an employee of China Railway Beijing Group, a state-run engineering company that is involved in the rescue and relief work, said, “There may be a need for a drapery system to prevent loose boulders from falling down on the slopes. This will help ensure smooth traffic on the road.” “<\/p>\n
Similarly, workers have placed steel gabion mesh on the outside of the road to prevent road erosion due to the flow of the river. <\/p>\n
Additional gabion nets have also been placed in readiness so that the structure can be expanded if the water level of the nearby river rises due to rain. <\/p>\n
Experts are also continuously assessing the status of the water level of the river after the landslide. The landslide was caused by the collapse of a glacier in the high Himalayan region in the upper part of the river bordering Nepal. <\/p>\n
China’s Ministry of Water Resources said on Monday that the flow of water in both the upper and lower areas of the glacier collapse was normal at present, based on drone footage and remote-sensing imagery. According to the ministry, the barrier lake of Purepu Tsangpo, formed by a landslide in the upper part of the port, has also been drained naturally. Rescue operations were hampered at one point due to the high risk of the lake bursting. The dams formed by small landslides in the downstream areas have also not seen any significant change and the water flow is normal, the ministry said.<\/p>\n
