The Nepal National Guardians Association has urged the government to immediately prioritize the guardianship, treatment and rehabilitation of children who have lost their parents in the Bhotekoshi floods.

Kosh Bahadur GC, central president of Nepal National Guardians Association, said the state should take special initiatives to immediately manage the children who have lost their families and homes due to floods and landslides. Speaking at a press conference organized on the educational situation after the Bhotekoshi floods, GC said that arrangement of food, shelter and medical treatment of the affected families should be the first priority rather than the operation of schools and colleges.

He said, “The first duty is to provide guardianship to the children who have lost their parents. Whether it is done by the state or the local, whether it is done by the government or by some industrialist, businessman or individual, the work of getting them guardianship should be done first.” He said that some families have been completely displaced due to the floods and some children have lost their parents. He said that in such a situation, the safe settlement and guardianship of the children should be ensured before sending them to school.

The GC said that three issues should be prioritized immediately. According to him, the rehabilitation, treatment and guardianship of the affected are the issues that need to be addressed immediately.

He said, “Pay attention to the matter of rehabilitation and guardianship and treatment first. Three things should be done immediately.” “

A large number of people are still missing in the flood-affected areas, and the GC should also give priority to collecting the details of the actual damage and identifying the affected families. According to him, although the government data mentions that thousands of people are missing, the actual number may be much higher. He also said that there is a lack of infrastructure to reopen schools and colleges immediately. He said that it will take time to resume educational activities as many schools and colleges in the affected areas have been damaged or displaced.

“It takes months to move schools and colleges, sir,” he said, quoting information received from locals. There is no infrastructure. “

GC said that before resuming schools, attention should also be paid to the health and security of the affected families. He said that special attention should be paid to first aid and sanitation as there is a risk of spreading diseases after floods.

The association has also stressed on the need to monitor whether the distribution of relief materials is effective or not. The GC said that the affected families should ensure that they are getting basic necessities including food, clothing and treatment. “The first is the system of rehabilitation, rehabilitation. First of treatment, and then of rehabilitation. How will we rehabilitate them?” he said.

The association has said that it will facilitate the flood-affected areas through local people’s representatives and their representatives. President GC said that although the association is not in a position to provide immediate relief financially, it will help the affected families through humanitarian assistance, coordination and awareness.

He also said that social psychocounselling is needed for the people and families who are mentally affected by the floods. He said that since the affected people are now displaced to different places, psycho-counseling should be provided according to the condition of individuals and families rather than collectively.

‘People are terrified, they are terrified, they are mentally deranged. Let’s work to give some relief to those who are deranged,’ he said.

The association has also welcomed the announcement made by the state government for the education of flood-affected children. GC said that the announcement of the state government to provide free education and accommodation up to class 12 to the children who lost their parents due to the floods was taken as a positive step.

He praised the government’s positive works and said that any weaknesses should be taken care of.

“Let us also appreciate the work we have done, point out the weaknesses, caution and appreciate the work we do,” he said.

The association has also conducted an on-site study on the situation in the flood-affected areas. The representatives of the association coordinated with the local people’s representatives and people of the affected areas and collected information about the educational and humanitarian situation there.

GC said that all sides should rise above political divisions and work together to support the affected families.

He said, “In such a situation, all Nepalis should be one. We do nothing in this or that name. We all support us in sorrow and become a supportive friend in sorrow.” The association has said that in the coming days, the association will take initiatives for the rehabilitation of the affected families, guardianship of children and continuity of education, in collaboration with the local level, people’s representatives, media and other stakeholders.

Kathmandu.
