The present government has attacked the spirit of the Jenji movement: Advocate Tripathi<\/p>\n

Kathmandu. Senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi has alleged that the present government is running against the spirit and spirit of the Jenji movement that took place a year ago. He claimed that the government formed by using the name of the Jenji movement and the popular support it has created has forgotten the main purpose of the movement. <\/p>\n

In an interview with Nepal News Bank, Tripathi said that the sacrifices of those who lost their lives in the Genji movement should not be allowed to go in vain. But he alleged that the government formed after the movement did not work according to the mandate of the Genji Movement. According to him, the main objective of the Genji movement was good governance, ending corruption, opposing structural corruption, establishing the rule of law and ending impunity. But now, he said, the old trend is continuing in all these areas. “The government was formed on the shoulders of the Genji movement, but its spirit was betrayed,” he said. Tripathi alleged that the present government had gained power by selling the name of the Genji movement. <\/p>\n

He claimed that the issues raised before the movement against corruption, misgovernance and ‘Nepo Baby’ are still the same. “Yesterday there was a movement against Nepo Baby, now Nepo Baby has come again. There was a movement against corruption and even now we are witnessing extreme corruption and misgovernance,” he said. <\/p>\n

According to him, the people have not been able to experience the good governance and service delivery expected from the government. Tripathi alleged that digital freedom, one of the important agendas of the Genji movement, has now become a means of suppressing critics of the regime. <\/p>\n

According to him, organized groups have become active in attacking those who criticize the government on social media through abusive language and obscene language. “There was a movement for the freedom of digital platforms. Now the same digital platform is being hijacked and used as a tool for the fascism of the government,” he said. <\/p>\n

He claimed that the tendency to attack social media in an organized manner has increased as soon as critical voices are raised against the government. He said that this has weakened democratic debate and discourse. He said that it is serious to see the tendency to abuse the victims of floods and other disasters through social media. <\/p>\n

Tripathi said that there should be an impartial investigation into the violence during the agitation and the developments that developed after it and action should be taken against the culprits. He questioned the government for not getting justice to the families of those who were shot during the agitation. <\/p>\n

“A year has passed, not a single person has been brought to justice,” he said. This is a serious human rights violation. Those involved should be brought to justice. He accused the government of trying to hide the incident by not making the human rights report public. <\/p>\n

He said that since the Human Rights Commission is a constitutional body, its report cannot be hidden.<\/p>\n

He demanded that the CIAA should investigate and prosecute those found guilty in criminal cases. <\/p>\n

‘Criminal elements hijacked the movement in the name of Genji<\/strong>‘<\/p>\n

Tripathi said that criminal activities which were not in line with the main purpose of the movement were also in the name of the Genji movement and it should be investigated. He raised serious questions especially about the jailbreaks, arson and vandalism of public and national structures across the country. <\/p>\n

“The spirit of the Genji Movement was to get people who are in jail for serious crimes out of jail?” he asked, “How did the jail break happen across the country? Whose design did it happen?” He also said that the damage to important structures of the state including Singha Durbar, Parliament, Presidential Palace, Supreme Court should also be investigated. <\/p>\n

“The heritage of the nation was destroyed, the parliament was burnt, the presidential palace was attacked, the court was set on fire. There was an attempt to burn the files of serious crimes,” he said, “Therefore, the Genji Movement seems to have been hijacked by the criminal elements.” According to him, after the movement, there is a situation of politically glorifying the people who came out of jail and were involved in various incidents. <\/p>\n

‘Cases were withdrawn by misusing political power’<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tripathi also alleged that cases against various people were withdrawn by misusing state power in the political situation created after the movement. He said that the decision to withdraw cases of serious nature, especially related to the leadership of political parties, has promoted impunity. <\/p>\n

“If someone is innocent, they should face a trial in the court and get an acquittal from there,” he said, adding, “Isn’t it an abuse of power to withdraw the cases of dozens of people?” Tripathi warned that the trend of withdrawing cases related to financial crimes, including money laundering, could put Nepal at greater risk in the international financial system. <\/p>\n

“Justice should be given to the martyrdom of Genji. Now there is no debate about their justice,” he said, “It seems that their martyrdom has been misused and used as a strategy to seize power.” He called for a free and impartial investigation into the human rights violations, violence, jailbreaks, destruction of public property and the political developments that followed. <\/p>\n

“The report of the Human Rights Commission should be made public in its entirety. Legal proceedings should be initiated against the persons named in it,” he said. According to Tripathi, the government should be run according to the spirit of the Genji movement, but the opposite is being done. <\/p>\n

“The work is being done against the spirit of Genji, not according to Genji’s mandate,” he said. The Genji movement has been hijacked. “<\/p>\n

The government was limited to the agenda of power grab<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tripathi alleged that the government formed after the Genji movement failed to work according to the mandate of good governance and meritocracy. He said that despite the rumors of money laundering in public posts and appointments against the process, it has not been effectively investigated. <\/p>\n

He alleged that appointments were being made through the back door in the name of open competition and meritocracy.<\/p>\n

“It has been reported in the market that the auction of public posts worth Rs 30 million to Rs 50 million is rampant,” he said, adding, “There is a demand for investigation into the appointment of joint secretary. <\/p>\n

Tripathi claimed that the performance of the government was very weak and said that most of the new faces are old political characters or from controversial backgrounds. According to him, the government neither has a vision of good governance, nor clear guidelines nor effective delivery. <\/p>\n

He also alleged that there was an attempt to influence the court. Referring to the fact that a fourth-ranking person was made the Chief Justice, he said that there was an attempt to maintain control over the judiciary. <\/p>\n

Tripathi said that full truth, justice and accountability should be established for the incidents that took place on the 23rd and 24th during the Genji movement. Accusing the Karki Commission’s report of being selective, he demanded that the report of the Human Rights Commission be made public and evidence-based investigation and prosecution of the culprits. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
