Kathmandu. The results of the Secondary Education Examination (SEE) of community secondary schools in Dhankaul Rural Municipality of Sarlahi district have been very weak this year. Serious questions have been raised about the quality of the local education sector after a large number of students were ‘non-graded’ in both regular and grade increase examinations.

According to the education section of Dhankaul Rural Municipality, a total of 141 students had appeared for the examination under the regular category. Of them, only 20 students have been graded while 121 students have been non-graded. Similarly, out of 39 students who appeared for the examination, only one has been ‘graded’ while 38 students have been ‘non-graded’. There are three community secondary schools in the rural municipality.

A total of 34 students from Durga Secondary School at Dhankaul Bazaar had appeared for the examinations in the regular category, out of which only three have been graded. A total of 31 students have been graded. Out of 7 students who participated in the grade increase, only 1 has been ‘graded’. The results of Janata Secondary School in Harkatawa are even weaker. Of the 65 students enrolled in the regular category, only seven have been graded while 58 students have been non-graded. All 25 students who participated in the grade increase examination have been ‘non-graded’.

Out of the 42 students from Janakalyan Secondary School in Dhobiniya, only 10 have been graded. The remaining 32 students have been ‘non-graded’. Even 7 students who participated in the grade increase could not be graded. Looking at the results, it is clear that most of the students have failed to meet the minimum educational standards. Due to the continuous poor results, questions have been raised on the teaching system of community schools, conducting classes, regular attendance and educational responsibility of teachers.

Local parents have blamed the poor quality of teaching in the school, the lack of effective functioning of regular classes and the lack of adequate educational guidance for the students. Yukti Ram, chief of the education section, said that after the disappointing results in the SEE, the interaction will be held now. He said that the reason for this result will be investigated. Of the total 10,021 students enrolled in the district, 4,365 have been ‘non-graded’.
