Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: Nepal Medical Council (NMC) has directed the government to remove the word ‘Doctor’ (Dr) from its name. Council’s officiating registrar Dr Dipendra Pandey urged the government to remove the word ‘doctor’ within 15 days, saying it was found that any health worker or individual had the word ‘doctor’ in front of their name against the law.
He said that health workers or persons of any discipline other than doctors registered with the Council and those who have obtained the title of Doctor under the Disciplinary Council Act are not allowed to use the word ‘Doctor’ in front of their names.
According to him, the Council has the legal authority to provide treatment, counsel and use the post of doctor before the name of the new medical system in Nepal only on the doctors registered with the Council as per the Nepal Medical Council Act, 2020.
He also directed to remove such illegal or illegal prescription doctors from official documents, prescription pads, clinic signboards, visit cards and all social media platforms
.
As per the Act of the Council, the Council will have to pay a jail term of up to three years or a fine of three thousand rupees if anyone is found using the title ‘Dr’ in front of the name of any person registered with the Council or who is not registered with the Council.
The Council has said that obtaining an academic degree by mentioning the word ‘Doctor’ in the certificates of various universities at home or abroad does not automatically mean that one has not automatically obtained permission to practice medicine independently.
