Kathmandu. Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has said that more than 5 lakh active members of the party have updated their membership. Talking to media persons in Chitwan, Thapa said that according to the statistics of the meeting till Monday evening, the number of applications he himself had applied for and received through the process has increased to more than five lakh.

Earlier, 708,000 active membership was renewed for the party’s 15th general convention. Explaining the reason for the decrease in the number of members in comparison to the number of renewals, Thapa said, “We don’t want the friends who were active or were made active only for the convention to remain active members.”

He said that this time the practice of someone making membership of another person has been abolished and the rule of participation of a person himself to become a member has been made mandatory. He said that through this process, 6 to 6.5 lakh actual active members of the party will be updated and this number is the size of what they expected.

According to Thapa, the update work will be completed by June 12 and remaining technical works will be completed. After that, the other regular processes of the general convention will move forward.

He also said that Vice-President Bishwa Prakash Sharma is holding talks with the disgruntled leaders to resolve the intra-party disputes. Thapa is scheduled to leave for Gorkha after completing his program in Chitwan.
