. Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Gita Chaudhary has said human-wildlife conflict and shortage of fertilizer are the major challenges for the Ministry at present.

Apprising the meeting of the Agriculture, Cooperatives and Natural Resources Committee under the House of Representatives on Friday, Minister Chaudhary informed about the works carried out so far in the forest and environment sector, the progress review of the fiscal year 2082÷83 and the future action plan.”Human-wildlife conflict in particular is a major issue right now,” she said.

The Ministry of Agriculture is now grappling with two problems, one is the fertilizer problem and the other is human-wildlife conflict. We are working on both of these with the highest priority. About 75% of the day’s time is spent on these two subjects. “

Minister Chaudhary stressed the need for serious review of why the human-wildlife conflict could not be resolved in the long term. He stressed the need of active support of people’s representatives, stakeholders and the community not only for giving suggestions but also for its implementation.

“There are many who give ideas, but few who support the implementation,” she said.

This is not only a problem of the ministry, but of all. Therefore, everyone should stand as my charioteer for the solution. Stating that this year has been taken as the ‘year of legal reform’, she said that works are underway to make the old laws related to the forest and agriculture sector as per the time. She said that the draft of the Farm Act is in the preparation stage and its implementation would be effective once the laws are amended.

Stating that the lack of forest guards has affected forest conservation and human-wildlife conflict management, she said that the recruitment process would be started to fill the vacant posts which have been vacant for a long time.

“For years, we have not been able to recruit forest guards,” she said. Currently, only a little over 200 of the 1100 posts are working. So, this time, we will start the process of recruiting forest guards by making a new procedure. Stating that the government has prioritized Chure conservation, forest management, timber price addition and industrialization, Minister Chaudhary stressed the need for legal and policy reforms to attract foreign investment.

Reiterating that the government has zero tolerance towards corruption, she clarified that immediate action would be taken if the information about the irregularities in the forest sector is brought to light.

“We have zero tolerance for corruption,” she said. Where there is evidence of irregularities, we will take immediate action. The Ministry is always ready to collaborate with all sides to transform challenges in agriculture, forestry and environment sectors into opportunities. ’
