. KATHMANDU: Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) is celebrating the 32nd International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples across the country. Preparations for the same have reached the final stage.
Organising a press conference on Thursday, NEFIN informed that preparations have been completed for the nationwide celebration of the Day with the slogan ‘Protecting Earned Rights is the Need of the Day: Our Shared Commitment to Building an Inclusive and Just Nepal with Identity’.
The Federation has expressed the belief that the Day would further strengthen diversity, coexistence, social harmony and national unity. The Federation has decided to take out a cultural rally from Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu from 11:00 am on August 9.
The rally will start with traditional ethnic costumes, musical instruments, folk songs, cultural pageant and traditional dances before converging on the main event at Tundikhel before going through Bhadrakali, Sahid Gate, Sundhara and Bir Hospital.
Thousands
of indigenous nationalities representatives, ethnic organizations, youths, women, students, artists and cultural groups from Kathmandu Valley, Sindhupalchowk, Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Kavrepalanchowk and other districts will participate in the program.
The Vice President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal is expected to be the chief guest at the main function to be held at the open forum at Tundikhel. High-ranking government officials, heads of constitutional bodies, members of the Federal Parliament, representatives of various political parties, diplomatic missions, development partners, civil society, human rights activists, academicians, intellectuals, artists, journalists and thousands of representatives of indigenous nationalities from across the country will be present.
The main attraction of the program will be the cultural performances of various indigenous nationalities of Nepal. According to the Federation, Dhime dance of Newar community, Digre dance of Magar, Tamang Selo, Damfu, Sherpa welcome dance, Thakali dance, Rajbanshi dance, Majhi Khayali dance, Sunuwar dance, Thami Maruni dance and original dance, songs, musical instruments and cultural tableaux of different ethnic communities will be presented in the festival.
The organizers believe that these performances will convey the message of preserving Nepal’s multicultural identity, unique traditions and cultural heritage. An exhibition of indigenous dishes, handicrafts, local products, costumes, artefacts and cultural heritages and a food festival will also be organized on the premises of Tundikhel. Around
50,000 participants are expected to attend the event and Nepal Telecom’s Cell on Wheels service will be operated and journalists from 60 countries will be able to broadcast live through national and international media with the participation of journalists from 60 countries. The Federation has also informed that necessary preparations for health, sanitation and basic facilities of the participants have been completed.
According to the Federation, a week-long programme will be held throughout the country on the occasion of the Day.
Symposium, interaction, cultural festival, language conservation programme, blood donation, tree plantation, youth and women conference, sports, book and photo exhibition, mother tongue journalism conference, programmes related to indigenous knowledge and biodiversity conservation are among the major activities planned for the festival.
On the occasion, FNJ President Nima Lama Hyolmo described Nepal’s cultural, linguistic and ethnic diversity as an invaluable asset of the nation and stressed the need for the state to be more serious about implementing the rights of indigenous nationalities.
