Rautahat’s paddy fields turned into reservoirs, farmers in distress
. God has struck a big blow on the farmers of Rautahat who are waiting for a small grace of nature. Due to incessant and torrential rain in the past few days, paddy fields across the district have turned into huge reservoirs. Not only the fertile lands around rivers, ponds and local reservoirs, but the newly planted green paddy bales in all the 18 local levels of the district are now buried under murky water. The farmers of the district are now in pain as the investment of fertilizers and seeds bought with months of hard work, sweat and loans has been washed away in front of their eyes.
Due to the lack of proper drainage of water in the paddy fields, the flood water has accumulated on the basis of months of hard work. As the fields become lake-like, the rice plants that are just taking root have started to rot underwater.
Krishna Dev Patel, a farmer from Vrindavan Municipality, is devastated to see the paddy fields cultivated in more than 5 bigha of land completely submerged.
With tears in his eyes, he expressed his ordeal, “Paddy was sown in the mud without saying day and night, without sunlight. The water destroyed everything. Now how to raise a family. “
This problem has worsened in most areas of Vrindavan Municipality. After hearing the cries of the farmers, Mayor Binod Kurmi himself has been deployed in the fields with a bulldozer to open the water drain. Becoming sensitive to this serious plight of the farmers, Mayor Kurmi said, “This pain of the farmers is my own pain. We are trying our best to extract water from the fields. At this time, we will hold special discussions in the executive meeting and take a concrete decision on providing relief and compensation to the farmers. According to Agriculture Knowledge Centre, Gaur, most of the paddy fields in the district have been destroyed due to heavy rains and inundation. Fields that should have been covered with greenery have been reduced to barren and muddy dumps. According to the Knowledge Centre, inundation of paddy fields is a common problem in almost all the local levels of the district and it is collecting detailed data about the loss in which municipalities. According to initial estimates, millions of rupees of farmers’ investment has been lost, due to which there is a risk of a major drop in paddy production in the district this year and a food crisis.
The paddy crop, which is considered to be the only source of food and livelihood for the family, has been destroyed in this way. If the government and stakeholders do not provide immediate relief, insurance and alternatives for the coming days, it is certain that farmers will be displaced from paddy farming.
