. The Ministry of Education and Sports organized the first session of the workshop on ‘University Faculty Admission, Development and Promotion: Mission Alignment, Motivation and Impact’.
The first session of the two-
day policy workshop organized with the objective of making the recruitment, professional development and promotion system of teachers and professors of the university timely, inclusive and aligned with the institutional mission of the university concluded on Friday.
Concluding the first session, Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel stressed on the need of exchange of good practices among universities.
He stressed on the need of making the appointment process of teachers and employees transparent, fair and based on equal standards, creating a student-friendly educational environment and making university operation and management technology-friendly.
Secretary at the Ministry Chudamani Poudel expressed the belief that the workshop would bring important conclusions towards achieving international level excellence by reforming the university as per the changing context. The workshop stressed the need to review the existing admission and promotion policy to make the knowledge production, research, innovation and community contribution of universities effective.
Identification of best practices, development of an incentive system in line with the institutional mission, exchange of inter-university experiences and the possibility of long-term policy reforms in higher education were discussed.
Prof. Shyam Sharma of Stony Brook University, USA, was the main facilitator of the program.
Head of the Department of Investigation Deepak Kumar Khadka, Prof Ajay Bhattarai, Surendra Subedi, Dr. Reshma Tuladhar, Smriti Kala Panta and Roshi Lamichhane facilitated the theme.
Vice-chancellors, professors and policy experts from the University Grants Commission, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu University, Pokhara University, Purbanchal University, Sudurpaschim University, Madan Bhandari University of Science and Technology and Agriculture and Forestry University are participating in the two-day workshop.
Participants pointed out the need for policymaking that equally encourages research, teaching, innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and social responsibility. According to them, there is a need to make the faculty recruitment and promotion system more inclusive, transparent and result-oriented to enhance the quality of universities, social use of knowledge and the effectiveness of higher education.
In the first session, vice-chancellors and representatives of various universities presented the best practices and policy challenges of their institutions.
Chief Advisor to Minister for Education, Shailendra Jha and high officials of the Ministry were also present on the occasion.
The second session of the second session will be held today (
Saturday) with a group presentation on institutional policy evaluation related to higher education and discussions on it. According to the Ministry, the suggestions received on the basis of the conclusion of the workshop would be used as a base material for the improvement of the university’s faculty management and higher education policy.
