Iran-Oman agreement on Strait of Hormuz, signals to ease the movement of commercial ships
Kathmandu. Iran and Oman have reached an agreement on the preliminary framework of an agreement on the management of the Strait of Hormuz. According to Iranian media, significant progress has been made in ensuring the safe passage of maritime merchant ships between the two countries.
Hassan Ghashghavi, a spokesman for the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian parliament, told the state-run IRNA news agency that the final draft of the agreement on the management of water transport through the Strait of Hormuz was in the final stages of being prepared.
Details of the agreement would be made public soon, he added.
Meanwhile, Reuters news agency quoted a US official as saying that talks between Iran and Oman had made “significant progress” and an agreement was expected soon.
The official said the United States would lift sanctions imposed on Iranian ports as part of an agreement to restore the free flow of commercial ships.
The US
news website Axios also quoted a diplomat from one of the negotiators as saying that Iran’s negotiators are awaiting final approval from Iran’s Supreme Security Council for the deal. The diplomat expressed hope that the approval would be received soon.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai told a press briefing on Wednesday that “significant progress has been made in establishing a safe trade sea route between Iran and Oman in the Strait of Hormuz”.
According to him, the two countries have reached an agreement on the geographical coordinates of the proposed route and a joint statement containing the main points of the agreement is being finalized.
On February
28, Iran tightened its control over the Strait of Hormuz and banned the safe passage of ships belonging to Israel and the United States. This step was taken after a joint attack on Iranian soil.
The U. S. military then said it carried out several rounds of airstrikes on Iranian targets in the Hormuz region aimed at weakening Iran’s ability to threaten merchant ships.
Iran retaliated by launching missile and drone attacks targeting US military bases and structures in the region.
The international community is watching with interest a possible deal between Iran and Oman to ease tensions on the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy trading routes.
