On the 81st anniversary of the Nagasaki atomic bombing, the Japanese have strongly opposed the government’s efforts to increase defense spending and to amend Article 9 of the Japanese constitution to give up war.
Carrying anti-war placards and slogans, demonstrators warned that remilitarizing Japan would go against the country’s pacifist ideals and endanger future generations.
‘Defense spending continues to rise. Under Article 9 of the Constitution, Japan had pledged never to go to war again, but now it is continuously strengthening its military capabilities. I think it’s very dangerous. They are also trying to amend Article 9. Therefore, I believe that Article 9 should never be amended in the interest of future youth and children. After its defeat in World War II, Japan decided never to repeat its war mistake. I think we need to continue to protect that commitment,” one rally attendee said.
“For many of the attendees, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are still a fresh memory,” he said.
For a nation ravaged by war, they argue, militarisation does not open the door to the future.
Japan is the only country in the world that has suffered from a nuclear bombing. But now Japan is deploying missiles. I believe Japan should never have a nuclear weapon,” another rally attendee said.
Another female participant said, “I believe that if Japan goes down the path of militarization, it has no future.”

Some demonstrators also pointed to Japan’s economic weakness and said that adopting an aggressive military policy is a luxury the country cannot afford.
‘I wonder what a country with a food self-sufficiency rate of only 36 per cent is fighting a war on. I have always opposed the war and am deeply dissatisfied with what the Takaichi administration is doing now,” another rally attendee said.
Other participants said that amending the constitution could pave the way for unchecked military expansion and undermine the security arrangements that have kept Japan at peace for eight decades.
