The state could not be sensitive on the issue of mother tongue and identity: Nishkal Rai
Kathmandu.Nepali Congress lawmaker Nishkal Rai said the State should be more sensitive on the issues of mother tongue, identity and linguistic rights.
Addressing the third International Mother Language Journalism Conference organized by Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities Journalists here today, leader Rai said that mother tongue and identity are not only the issues related to the individual, but to the entire nation. Stating that human beings do not choose a particular language or identity at birth, he said that our language and identity are linked with nature, identity, diversity and culture.
“We are not born thinking that we will adopt this language,” he said.
Nature has created us where identity and diversity come together. It is connected to the culture. He said that the protection and promotion of mother tongue is not only a personal and family issue but also a national issue. He said that the state needs to be sensitive for this.
He said that the state has not been comparatively sensitive to the issues of mother tongue and indigenous nationalities in recent times.
He said, “It is clear from the budget speech regarding indigenous peoples. It is clear from the budget allocated to the Tharu Commission or the Dalit Commission. The state is not very sensitive. He stressed on the need to raise voice collectively for mother tongue, identity and linguistic rights, not only
and not only the parliament as a place to raise the voice of the community.
Similarly, Kshitij Thebe expressed his commitment to effectively addressing the voices raised for the protection, promotion and rights of mother tongue through the parliament.
He said that initiatives would be taken to address the issues related to mother tongue through the bill and the policy perspective of the state.
