Kathmandu KATHMANDU: Minister for Foreign Affairs Sishir Khanal has said the government has taken the government seriously to preserve the historical documents, documents, facts and evidence kept at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Responding to the queries raised by lawmakers in today’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Minister Khanal said that special attention had been paid to preserve the documents of historical and diplomatic importance in course of shifting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the past due to administrative necessity, availability of buildings and structural management. He said the prevailing laws have made clear provisions regarding the protection and management of treaties and agreements to which the Government of Nepal is a party.”There is a clear provision in the prevailing laws regarding the protection and management of treaties to which the Government of Nepal is a party,” Minister Khanal said, adding, “According to the Nepal Treaty Act, 2047, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs performs treaties, negotiations, diplomatic liaison and treaty-related works at the international level on behalf of the Government of Nepal.”

According to him, the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs has been under the purview of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs as per the Government of Nepal Work Division Regulations.

Similarly, he said that the National Archives has been given the responsibility of long-term preservation and management of historical documents of national importance as per the Archives Protection Act, 2046 BS.

Minister Khanal also shared that the concerned office would send the certified copies of the treaties and agreements signed by Nepal to the National Archives.

Minister Khanal said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has given high priority to the protection of documents of historical and diplomatic importance of the Government of Nepal. According to him, a separate Archive Management Section has also been formed on the basis of the organization and management survey report of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He informed that works related to the preservation of records have been carried out through this branch.

“Necessary coordination and initiatives are underway among the concerned bodies for the search, verification, digitization and safe preservation of the archives,” he said. Minister Khanal also informed the House of Representatives that preliminary process for the construction of the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already been initiated. He said that preparations are underway to construct the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the land currently housed in the Ministry of Home Affairs.

According to him, a consultant has been selected for the architectural drawing and engineering works of the building and the consultant has prepared the preliminary architectural drawing design of the building.

Minister Khanal said that discussions are underway at the Ministry regarding the architectural drawing design of the building and it is in the approval phase. According to him, in the fiscal year 2083÷84, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also allocated budget for the construction of its own building.”After completing all the processes, the construction of the building will be started by inviting tenders,” said Minister Khanal.
